I am sorry that happened and know you are all sick over it, I hope it gets fixed to your liking.

On the other subject,
Because someone is "young" can we always assume he/she was texting?
Who should I "assume" is drunk. on drugs, and what about tossing a lit cig out the window like they own the road, some gals putting on make up, people eating dinner...blasting stereo so the whole "hood" can hear the horrible tunes...the list of things people shouldn't do while driving is long....and well...glass houses and rocks....

That's right , It's a free country . We should be able to do all of those things and not be questioned . After all we are only killing and injuring the other people on the road . Usually the drunk driver or the texter just walk away with only minor injuries if any. We just had a local police K-9 officer killed last week along with his dog receiving severe injuries by a drunk driver three times the legal limit driving the wrong way on a one way highway with previous violations for drunk driving. This 40 year old police officer leaves behind a wife and 6 children. So I don't want to hear about glass houses. We need to be talking a whole lot more about prosecuting these people to the fullest extent.

No reflection on the Op,

bj1k Slow way down scolding me I am on this rant.... I was being way sarcastic because I see on forums people ranting where one thing is taboo but the next thing just as unsafe is okay because the person ranting does that, you know, not in my back yard do as I say not as I do idea, hence my glass house comment that you mistook......I had a guy telling me how bad texting and driving was but he thought flicking burning butts into traffic is okay....my thoughts are not directed at a person in general but at people in general. are you perfect , I sure am not.
I have stories of each thing I listed killing or hurting someone....
My point was young kids texting are far from the only road dangers being committed, not really fair to "assume" he was texting if he wasn't....and I would love to know if he was.

Thanks for the input and thoughts everyone!

He got his insurance info to me yesterday evening. Very nice kid... Extremely good manners. He was very apologetic.

After we had all the insurance stuff covered, I said, "You doing ok?" He said, "still upset with myself for doing this. I apologize again, sir. Glad you were OK." I told him all was forgiven because we ALL make mistakes. No need in rubbing his nose in it or asking if he was actually texting or otherwise distracted. He's beating himself up enough.

Now to find a body shop!

He sounds like a nice kid and I'm sure he is sorry but if he was texting and killed someone how would he feel ? Can't make it right at that point. They need far more education on this subject at schools and at home about the dangers of distracted driving in every form . Being a motorcycle rider makes my opinion even stronger on this subject. This needs to stop !

Not every "young" person is texting when they have a accident, we never found out if the "kid" in this thread was or wasn't texting.
I ride a cycle ( vw trike ) too it doesn't make a difference someone doing something unsafe is not fair to ANT person on the roads with them,
We need better ways to police and punish unsafe drivers, if/when it proves in this case cell phones are a involved in high numbers of accidents then things like tattle tales or killers but how? you mean a passenger can't use their phone while someone else is driving???
It all sucks my dad rip peace the last several years he was aline drove insane, my step mother had to walk that thin ice carefully to get the keys away from him and do most all the driving....

Cell and smoking o.k.
But no food and drink is where I draw the line.
And only sex with hot women permitted.

Not that those things are good either , but people were doing those things long before cell phones came out and we never had the stats that we have today with cell phone collisions. People get zoned out when they are using them. I have a cell phone but don't use it while driving. What's the problem. Pull over or don't use it.

I live on my cell for work (I talk on it) all hands free. when I have to text or answer a e mail I pull over. I see no difference talking hands free and talking to the person next to you. I do think texting and surfing the web is not a good thing wile driving. But I got rear ended once and the guy said to me I was changing the station on my radio it was bumper to bumper traffic.

But the good thing is no body got hurt the kid had INS and you might get a new paint job out of it. All and all it might of been a good day.

Didn't mean o.k. To use cell and smoke, meant it was o.k. With me to prohibit.

Be glad you were in a car and not on a bike. That's why I got rid of my motorcycle. It is easy to get distracted though. I did a couple of weeks ago and tagged a mailbox, luckily a new windshield and mirror a little rubbing compound. I was left with a dent to my car and my pride. When I'm in the Vette I really practice defensive driving

Here in Ontario the government has made it illegal to use cell phones while driving unless they are hands free, it's also illegal to smoke in a company vehicle or in any vehicle where children are present. Many question Big Brother being so overbearing myself included at first, but then I think back to when mom and dad took the family for a Sunday drive 7 kids in the old station wagon and the parents in the front seat smoking unfiltered export cigs. Now we are more educated and I agree with these laws maybe cops simply need to be empowered to seize all cell phones when in doubt and check phone history. This year in Florida a girl passed me on 75 going quite fast with both hands through the wheel texting she was oblivious to her surroundings scary Phil
