Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could tell what this part is (see pic, part is in my hand)?
And what is it for (although the name may give it away!).
It is in pretty bad condition, held together with cable ties and has a broken housing.
My AIM is on its way...
Hopefully, swapping it for a new one will resolve one of the many little nagging problems my beloved car has!
Hi j,
Well that's a button switch used up front at the headlight mechanisms that lights a warning light on the dash if the headlights are on but the doors aren't open.
I'm wondering if it's used somewhere else too near the location you show it…. but I don't know where.
The threads that mount it are broken off and the plastic tie is keeping the button pushed in.
Regards,
Alan
would the hood had a similar warning light?
The wires are definitely too short to reach the headlights.
It is a 76 if the year can help.
If I understand correctly, if the button is pushed in, I do not have any warning light on?
Maybe I should try to disconnect it or remove the cable ties holding the button down.
There is the risk that the part falls in bits in my hands and cannot be repositioned...
From the area it is at I think it goes to the key alarm, mine is the same way. i have a possibly found a key switch for my car because one of the prongs is broke off on mine

I had not thought of that.
Location wise, it is a good match.
Thanks for the hint, I will have a look.
I don't know what year your car is, but judging by the location and design of the switch, it looks like the anti tamper switch for the alarm mounted in the left front fender. My 77 has the same part and was in the same condition when I replaced it.
Finally someone with the same Micky Thomson valve covers as me. I have never seen anyone else with covers like mine except you. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one.

So this is what they are!
Now, I cannot figure out if this is a good or a bad thing... or maybe a does not matter thing...
Why would one change the valves covers? More pleasing aesthetics?
The OP gave me the originals as well. The car has and Eldebrok 1406 carb on what looks like a stock engine.
I wonder what I am going to find when I am going to do a tune up...
I have decided to go with Polished Aluminum, so eventually, I expect I will be changing these one day.
I like them over stock ones, because they look different. My car came with Valve cover wing nuts instead of regular bolts, I do find these come a little lose over time so the Wing nuts make it very easy to just twist them tight every once in a while. Mine came from Crappy Tire, I think. When I first got the car, I pulled them off and tried to polish them up by hand. Not very successful, next time I will use the electric polisher.
I can't see from your pic but my alternator is right near the valve cover. Like a piece of paper could barely fit in between them. Is yours the same?
These are short valve covers, I don't think I could get tall ones in there until I move the alternator back.
I can confirm the part you are looking at is the anti-tamper switch that sits just behind the alarm lock cylinder on the inside of the left fender. It's common to break off at the threads: the one on my 76 is in exactly the same condition. It's about $25 to replace from various vendors: your AIM will show you where it goes and how to put it in.
