Default which side grilles?

Team,
My basket case came with 2 sets of side grills. One set painted the other set looks brand new and never painted. My car is a driver. Im thinking that I should use the painted ones and offer the other set for sale to someone restoring a car that it would matter on. Unfortunately I dont know enough about them. They could be aftermarket knockoffs for all I know. I have attached a few pics and would like your opinions.

Google the GM part numbers. 017 and 018 are a pair, left and right. Ditto for 798 and 799; a pair.

Hi b,
There are no reproductions of the side grills.
The grills used in 70 are slightly different than the 71-72 grills.
The grills on my 71 have the …17,…18, part numbers.
From your pictures it's difficult to tell if the other pair are 70 grills or not.
A picture of the back would tell the tale.
If they're 70 grills they're a bit more valuable than the 71-72 grills because they're a bit rarer.
Regards,
Alan

Looks to me like the yellow pair are from a 1970.

The best way to tell is the raised ridge... Here is a picture that will explain it, but you can see the 1971-1972 cars had this ridge all the way around, the 1970 cars didn't, the edge was just rounded and sweeping.

Ok. Now I see it. The 2 unpainted ones are not a set. One is 3995017 and it has the lip so 71 or 72. The otherunpainted one is 3966798 and does not have the lip so a 1970.

How much are the 70s set worth? One is brand new never painted the other has yellow paint?

OK guys I just thought of another option. Don't read this thread Alan because it may give you a nervous twitch.

Do people buy just one side at a time? Would it be worth more money for me to sell the 2 new ones (never been painted) seperately? One side is a 70 and the other side is a 71-72 and just keep the mismatched ones on my car. It would not break my heart to recover a few bucks.

Any idea how much these things are worth?

Yes. People often need just one, to replace an damaged one, or fix a mismatched pair. Also, if you need a pair, finding one, gets you half way there.

I don't believe that the unpainted ones, are new. When you bought them from Chevrolet, they came through with a flat black primer on them. Every new one I've ever seen, was primered with just the chrome edges unpainted.

I think that you have used ones there, that someone has stripped the paint off of.

Why do you think you have a mismatched pair? From the part numbers posted, it appears that you have a pair of 70's, and a pair of 71-72's.

The yellow "797" and the stripped "798" are a pair of 70's. The yellow "018" and the stripped "017" are a pair of 71-72's.

Generally, 70-72 "egg crates" sell for about $100-$200 each, depending on the condition of the chrome and the studs. There were obviously fewer 70's made, so they could possibly be worth a little more.

Is there any chrome on the unpainted ones? It almost looks like they were sandblasted, removing both the paint and the original chrome. If the chrome is gone, it will definitely effect the value of them.

Guys,
Thanks for the education. yes I have 2 pairs one pair for a 70 and one pair for a 71- 72. I will keep the ones for the 72 and sell the 70 set. The chrome is great on both sets. The unpainted ones are heavily dusty they were not stored covered. The yellow ones were in bags. If I get 200 bucks for the set for a 70 that would be better than them sitting in my basement. My car just went to the body shop today for a fresh coat of Steel Cities Gray paint. Had to pay half down so I couple hundred back in the bank would make my CEO (translation = Wife) happy.
