Default 74 radiator touching shroud

Hey guys its me again.. Alrighty, In the past few weeks I have replaced my radiator and installed the shroud with a used shroud, (the old one broke into pieces when I removed it) this one has the same part# as the last. #339175. All the bolt holes lined up nicely as i put everything back the same way I took it out. the radiator rest properly in the brackets and mounts. And the shroud bolt holes liened up nicely. But when I put the radiator fan back on I noticed that the top right of the fan was touching the shroud. How can that be? I know you guys have the answer!

It can happen...loosen up the upper brackets and bolts and re-position the shroud. it will move. This car was not built with precision....there is room for thing to be moved slightly.

DUB is correct. If I remember right there are slotted holes for the up/down adjustment. These cars were not the best for fit. Sometimes you just have to file mounting holes and move things around a little to make things fit right . But what can we expect for a car that only cost a little over $5,000. new.

Well the corvette in 74 would have been closer to $6000 plus any additional options. That's roughly $28,846.15 in today's money. Today that will get you a pretty solid car. Back then they just didn't have as high quality lower cost manufacturing processes as we do today. They had to engineer in adjustability to save time during assembly.

The AIM says to try to shoot for .20" blade/shroud clearance all around.

YES...if engine mounts are good....and all other things considered.....I would get it to clear and then crank it and rev the engine and look and see how the engine reacts. You should be fine in being able to adjust it well above GM specs.

If you get in the .20" range, you're golden.

Thanks a million Mike! I lossened everything up and jacked up the whole assembley and now I have at least .20 /.25 of cleareance. I've noticed that some of the fan blades seem alittle longer than the others, you can barely tell the diffrence. Did the past owner file them down abit or something?

Filing them down would be something that good old Bubba would have done making the fan unbalanced.
