Can anyone tell me what the plate on the control valve is for and what the purpose is of the raised-90 degree three sided channel on the end by where the hoses connect? The plate seems to add difficulty when trying to attach the hoses. I have looked in several manuals and some of the pictures have the plate and some do not.
Thanks!

What "control" valve are you referring to? Please be more specific.
are you talking about the power steering control valve? if so, don't know what plate you are talking about, neither of mine sound like they have any plate like that, and I just did the hoses on the '76...

I think this is supposed to be a rock guard on the power steering control valve. Wonder if it works?

I am referring to the power steering control valve. The plate is attached using the bolts that connect the section that contains the ball stud that attaches to the pitman arm and the hydraulic valve section. I will take a picture and post it soon.
Thanks!
This plate is basically for protection is what I have figured it out to be...protects the two hoses at the end of the control valve.
The plate should not effect the installation of the hoses if the hoses are attached to the cylinder CORRECTLY first. I can tell you this....that about EVERY hose set I get I have to modify the hoses so they CORRECTLY go into the cylinder correctly...thus routing correctly to the control valve (IMPORTANT!)...and then curved ends of the hoses where they attach to the control valve have to be bent and re-clocked....so they will CORRECTLY go into the control valve without the hoses getting all bunched up because they are being twisted.
It looks like someone has fabricated a 'protective' shield for the control valve. The channel piece would be there to keep the flat piece from becoming bent. If that is a factory part, it's an ugly one.
After a bit of staring and thinking I went ahead and hooked things up. I have come to the conclusion that the 90 degree-three sided channel is used to correctly position/“clock” the hoses. Tightening the connection while holding the small-aluminum tubes against the sides of the raised channel results in the hoses being oriented correctly. it does add a little protection as well. And yes, it is an ugly piece.
Thanks!
I rescued this one out of a field and have been slowly bringing her back to life over the last two years. I am hoping to take her for a spin this week!
