I have a '78 C3, non-A/C car. I believe they make an air conditioning retrofit for the 68 to 77 cars. So if no options available, is it prohibitive to even think about trying to retrofit A/C in a '78? Thanks in advance.

Could be. I know if you were wanting to use a used system out of a 78...it would be ROYAL PAIN....because one of the fresh air doors is actually mounted under the right fender /top hood surround area...and honestly..I have never paid attention to see if the mount for it would have still be installed even though it is a NON-A/C car.
The firewall would have to be modified to accept a factory 'doghouse' at the firewall.
I would contact the AC guys like Classic, Nostalgia, Vintage or Oilair. They all have systems up to 76 but the 78 has a different heater box and controls. You should really talk to them, trying to use parts from a donor car or used parts is a waste.
I have installed a Sanden style AC compressor on my 78 which was an improvement over the R4 unit. Next is the condenser.
Hey guys,
Thanks for your replies! I will definitely follow up with the aftermarket folks because it clearly sounds like going "stock" is a fool's errand. Thanks again.
I installed a Vintage Air system into my 77, which required quite a number of changes. The 77 dash is a mix between the 68 to 76 and the 78 to 82. The center stack and console (including the AVAC controls) are very similar to the 78.
Rotonda,
Thanks for sending the link to your installation! Looks like quite a project but worth it for more comfort. I wouldn't care about losing the glove box space and would probably just utilize that area for some of the plumbing. Great work on your project! Interesting to see what hard work and knowledge can do.
