I've owned 11 vettes over the last 30+ yrs, (whew)..6 were C3's..but I'm a driver not an expert.
I'm currently a C5 owner (1+yrs)..but sometimes I dream of going back old school. For fun I'm looking at a Black '72 vert, here's the deal, I don't see Black color on the charts for '72..??
been awhile am I missing something ?
here's my short C3 history just for fun...
My very first vette was a '69 vert, small block 4spd also black but I figured out later was color changed.
2nd was a '73 coupe 350 a/t in that yrs lovely Ivy Green color with the tan vinyl guts..yuck
3rd was a also a '69, a fully primered 427 4spd rat coupe..never bothered to figure out what color it was.
4th was a white '73 unmolested 454 a/t coupe..fine car
5th was a beautiful but seasoned '81 Dark Blue sparkle with blue leather. Seats were more comfy than my C5.
my last was the best, a factory Red '72 454 4spd roadster with fresh black leather interior..still kicking myself..
OK enough, I know you guys know..is a black '72 legit from the factory.

Could be , not likely , but you never say never, check trim tag and build sheet or paper work .....a few black cars were special ordered during the early 70's ..they are very rare . I ve seen a documented 74 black coupe .
Here's my 72 that used to be my grandfathers. It's been at a shop for the last two months getting running again. I hope to have it home in a week or so. Original color was white.
I wonder just how many 72's were repainted black.....? I know while looking for mine I saw a 70 and a 71 that were both repainted black....All of these were in Georgia.
When I went searching for my '69 I was looking for a real code 900 black car because the color was discontinued until 1977 and I thought that was an interesting detail. I was surprised at how many black '69s had different color trim tags, usually green. Obviously the 70-76 black cars cause a lot of questions.
those black vettes are all gorgeous. just cuz the general decided no black vettes from 70 to 76 doesn't mean he was right. why is it ok to convert to 4 or 5 speed, do a crate 383, or ls swap but changing orig color is such an unforgivable sin? it is just one more number that doesn't match...and it goes good with every interior color.
Stan, does the trim tag list the paint as SPEC or SPECIAL? Would like to see a picture of the tag just to see what one looks like.
Tom,
If I remember the documentation correctly, the paint used was from the truck line (also assembled in St. Louis). It's a really cool car, made even more so by the fact nobody has really done anything to it.

Just to answer your rhetorical question, I think most Corvette people who would consider a color change an "unforgivable sin" would feel exactly the same way about converting to a 5 speed or a 383.

Stan, Is that the car that we judged in Ontario a few years ago? And I think now, it's in the hands of Dana?
If so, it is a very original, unmolested example of a factory painted, Black '72!
That 72 is a rare car. First time I have heard of a 70-76 painted black at the factory. Usually if you wanted a non factory color it was shipped in primer.
I had a documented 75 that was shipped in primer and painted black by the dealer. The trim tag said SPC.
