Default horn attachment

1969 corvette L46

I have an issue that I am trying to solve.

Where the passenger side horn attaches to the cross member there is a hole.. however the nut which is supposed to be behind the hole is not there.

Is there a general solution for this? Do I need to use a blind nut? If I do the hole will probably have to be enlarged in order to use the same size attachment bolt.. (1/4 - 20 I believe)

I'm sure others have run into similar problems.

Please help.

Thanks ..

The bolt is a 5/16-18. And if you are referring to the 'crossmember' being the metal support that is under the top hoods surround....and you can see this horn mounting location when the hood is UP....then...it may be possible to use a 'riv-nut'. If not...the possibly cutting a slot in the steel so you can slide on a 'speed nut'.

Hey ... Thanks DUB. I'm going to try the riv-nut option... even though I don't have an installation tool... but on youtube they show some "tooless" installations.

Best of luck. Honestly wishing you good luck.....because I have the correct tool and they are NO fun to squeeze and get to hold.

Dub.. I'm thinking about going with an aluminum riv-nut..I think it would be easier to squeeze down. What do you think?

I would think that this should work...but...I have the steel ones.

QUESTION:
How close to perfect factory look re you going for in this area.....meaning.....do you want it so you can not tell this welded in nut failed.....OR....are you willing for a slight modification that may allow this to be fixed easier ( so-to-speak) but you can tell that it has been slightly modified??????

( Keep in mind...I have so many adhesives on hand at my shop..I do not have to go out and buy something specific for a repair because I already have it.....which may be the case in this scenario....depending on how you answer the question.
