the different starter bolt pattern is to change the offset for the different diameter starter wheel. when upgrading trans, you have to know what starter wheel you are getting and then know whether or not it'll bolt to your crankshaft...anything after 85 uses a smaller bolt circle on the crank flange and won't fit an older engine.

Differ from what ? The 327 has the same diameter ( small ) flywheel as the GM 6 cylinders which takes the starter with the bolts straight across. The 350 takes the larger flywheel with the staggered bolt starter . Where do we differ ?

I am sorry, but you confused me with the "but the starters will fit standard or automatic but it is determined by 6 or 8 cylinders". Lou.

OK , 8 cylinder with large flywheel for standard or large flex plate for automatic would take the starter with the angle bolts. (Same starter). 6 cylinder GM or 327 with small flywheel or small flex plate would take the starter with the bolts straight across . (Same starter) for standard or automatic.

There are 2 different Chevy starters for 2 different diameter flywheels/flexplates. Straight bolt pattern on the left is for 153 tooth; offset pattern on right is for 168 tooth. Nothing more to it than that.

Precisely. And you need to get a starter wheel that works with the late model trans you are retrofitting and the 2-piece seal orig engine you are hooking it to.
