I agree with MW that the female connector is for the backup light connector.
The switch on the transmission has a long lead with male connector on it that comes up through the transmission tunnel to make that connection.

the reason I recognized that is because ages ago my directional signals would stop working because the fuse blew. Eventually discovered the fuse only blew when I put the car in reverse. Discovered the reverse light wire harness was touching the headers and had grounded out.

Had the exact same problem, wire grounding...it started occurring after I dropped my gas tank, oddly enough..
