I was able to replace the bulb in the bottom of the heater control. The bulb works, but it doesn't make the control light up at all. What sense does that make?
When you say the bulb works, you mean it works when it's installed in the control or are you talking about on the bench?
There's only a few tiny slits that let any light actually make it up to the lens so it's hard to see almost anything unless it's actually dark. Like a lot of the vette lights, it's pretty dim at the best of times. Make sure your light switch is turned to the brightest setting.
I converted to LEDs which are brighter, but honestly not that much, especially compared to the modern stuff

I actually went outside in the dark, put in an LED bulb, turned on the car, turned on the headlights, and held the bulb/socket in my hand. I can see that the bulb is lit up. Then I stick it in the bottom of the unit and nothing! It doesn't seem to light it up at all! I'd rather not pull out the unit, but it's like there must be a blockage or something...
Yeah, I saw that post and it doesn't really make any sense why the light can't get through. And yeah, I don't want to pull the whole thing out just to see what's wrong. Oh well. Thanks.
Maybe that's my problem. My LED is from some company named Gaatu and maybe has too focused a light beam. Maybe it's just not spreading out well. I'll try another bulb because it makes no sense.
That was the problem. I took out the LED and put in a regular bulb. The LED was apparently casting its light straight up at the plate and wasn't diffused enough. Now it lights up at night.
