I have read a lot here on the forum that they slip. I was checking the timing when the light started to smoke and thats when I stopped. My question is if my balancer is the original or not. It measures 1-5/8 thick, I can't measure the diameter because of all the pulleys. I was thinking of maybe just putting a new one on to be on the safe side. I know all the pulleys line up correct. I have seen that some are not as thick, and I was thinking they would not line up with a thinner one or am I wrong in that.
I forgot to say it is a 350 l82.
I wanted to get the balancer before I tear the front apart.
They replaced the light yesterday at Sears.
I hope you can help with the description I gave. I know it would be better with a picture but I have tried in the past and was unable to post pictures. I got lucky with my avatar. I have followed the instruction in the sticky but it comes up so different that it throws me off.
Thanks for the help in the past.

the overall length of the damper would determine if the mounting surface for the pulley ends up at the same location as the current one. An L82 would come with a 8" diameter balancer.

Mel thanks for the information. I saw on I believe Ecklers they have a 8" for 340.00 or something like that which seems high. I will keep checking.
Thanks again Mel.

Do yourself a favor and rent or buy a good puller/installer for a harmonic balancer. There are videos on YouTube on how to use them.
I found the two person program works best. You do the work and hold the tools the second person tells you what to do and holds the beer.
Get a Professional Products pt#80000 it is smaller...lighter and team it with a Moroso 6.750 pointer....
You will be happy you did I have used these for over ten years on street builds and they work great.....
The Pro-Street balancer posted above is not a bad piece either.
Or if neither of those suit you....check out Pioneer. They are a dead ringer for stock. No marks on them though for advance....

Use an impact and it will zip right off.....make sure to lube the threads of the tool...
Thanks to all you guys for the help.
I am still wondering about the thickness of the balancer. Mine is about 1-5/8 or a little more will that throw my pulleys off if the other is any thinner? I have read some post where they had problems with pulleys not matching up with the bottom pulleys. Wright now mine look perfect.
Thanks guys you are the best here on the forum.

If you remove your harmonic balancer...I am sure there is local parts house that may carry a balancer...probably one made from Dorman...and when you take it to the parts store...check it. And BEFORE you buy it....you can line up the groove on the inside of the balancer where it goes onto the crankshaft and then see of the notch is in the same spot.
IF the outer surface of your balancer has a groove in it due to the oil seal that is pressed into the timing chain cover.....and you want to re-install your original balancer because it is good....you can buy the repair sleeve that they offer that also comes with a new oil seal and press it on.....OR....buy a new balancer and seal and install them.
And not that it matters....but I get my timing tab gauges from GM Performance Parts. I do not trust any others...do not ask me why....it kinda is like how I HATE to install a chrome aftermarket oil dipstick and tube ...because they usually are wrong.
