For what it is worth:

I have done this type of work more times than I can count.....AND YES...the time spent taking the column out is WORTH IT!!!! Can it be done with the column dropped a little bit.....YES...because I have done that also. But with the column out of the way.... I can get all light sockets and grounds attached and the wiring harness caged correctly and get it in MUCH EASIER.

AND YES....the dash wiring harness routing IS different than later models...I knwo this for a fact also.

If you have not done it....replace all of your speedo/tach light bulbs with new ones...and make sure the ones you use have brass sockets so they cage correctly in the socket and stay. Because if you use some 'other' style of light bulb with the shiny silver socket...the pins in the socket can be not as well constructed...and when you go to put the light in the gauge...it will pop out of the socket.
