anyone ever remove some rear leafs to drop the rear when it sits high?
my 74 sat high in the rear when I got it, after doing a body on (under body) restoration..stripped & painted the accessible frame/rear/rebuilt suspension etc. i put in 2" longer spring bolts to drop it in the rear some & it came down but still sits like it has air shocks on it, like 3" over the top of the rear tire? can I remove rear spring leafs to drop it, what could be hiking up the rear so high?
Hi L,
It may be that your car is sitting high in the rear is because it has a replacement spring of some type installed.
A picture of the spring, and the rear suspension in general, may help folks explain what you're seeing.

Alan
When I replaced my spring with an aftermarket spring it sat high so I took the longest leaf out(f-41,7 leaf). It went down to the right height and haven't had any issues.
my first thought was that the spring was replaced by the original owner only because it has one hell of an arc to it, so maybe thats it? here's a pic of the car as sits. I went with 17" front & rear wheels/tires & went to a 10" leafs spring bolt on the ends because the car sat high before with 15" wheels on it. here is a pic of the car before & after, I have 3.5" above the tire on both sides I'd like the wheel opening to be even with the top of the tire. now I am still working on the car and have not driven it since the work I did, I read on the forum after doing such work and having the car in the air will require me to drive it around and settle the spring/ride out. I have driven it up and down the street but thats it since its not tagged or insured yet. I just can't see it dropping as much as i'd want it just by driving it around?

I don't know how high a stock c3 sits to begin with, where would the top of the tire & edge of the fender well be, on a stock c3? it also looks worse from the side because I still have the spare tire tub out and you can see alot of light in the rear of the well.
thats how I'd like it to sit in the rear, I do realize I went to a 17" low profile tire and that does not show as much meat as a 15" tire would, I did go with a tire that put me at the same tire height as stock 9I think @27")
you should be able to get it much lower. the front even looks high compared to your before pictures. You really need to drive it first and go from there. around the block is all it takes.
Have you already set the rear camber? I know when I put my car back together it was sitting a little high in the rear until I did the rear end alignment and got the camber set right. Just something to look at before tearing things apart.
running 17" wheels w/225-55-17 on the front & 255-50 ZR17 on the rear. KYB gas-a-just shocks.
I have not gotten the rear aligned or camber set yet either, getting that done in a few months so maybe I'll wait till thats done then drive it around the neighborhood a few times to see if it settles?
no the front is un-touched from when I got the car last april. I thought the front looked like it was lower then stock when I got it? I haven't tore into the front suspension yet but it's on the agenda for this year.
your measurement from center of wheel well to ground should be around 27-1/2 to about 28" Dont have exact measurements in front of me but can be found in the Assembly Manual.
Have you ever removed your rear suspension mounting crossmember?
Something looks "off" to me with yours.
It seems to be an inch or two lower than the frame crossmember just rearward.
Mine is practically flush with the frame.
