I got a call from a friend this morning, not good news, I had my '74 in his garage for some cam & lifter work along with a new water pump and the news this morning was the shaft on the new water pump snapped and did more damage while it was at it, , bent the fan and clutch base in turn caused the fan to go into the radiator while breaking the shroud..
So far, if I were to replace it all with factory parts I'm looking at about $1k, so there's going to be some substitutions for now..
If the shaft of the "new" water pump indeed broke, causing that damage, the retailer who supplied the pump should be contacted, and told that they're in for a repair bill..........and I am 100% serious!!

I totally agree . It still would be cheaper than them paying out for his lawsuit if he was injured.
It's a De Witt aluminum radiator, they've been called and it can be repaired by them cheaper than a new one. I've thought about going with an electric fan but the stock fan moved a lot of air to cool the mild built 454 I have in there.
$200 vs $1000 is a pretty easy call unless you want an original looking engine bay. That 1G estimate sounds unusually high. Are you paying to have the work done?

I wasn't thinking about that, however, I used to work part-time for Advance Auto Parts, and we did the bulk of our sales with repair shops/dealer service departments. It didn't happen very often but a couple of times when I worked there, we had issues where a part we sold to a shop was defective as soon as it was installed, causing additional damage. There is a process to be followed, to file a claim to have that damage "taken care of".
OP, your radiator wasn't a "repaired unit" before the pump grenade, correct? If so, then you should have a new replacement, as well as replacement shrouds....
My money is that fan was never tightened properly and the first anyone new of it the blades where hitting the shroud and it snapped the shaft on the water pump .
That i could buy before a shaft failure which is very unlikely.

Just myop .. Not trying to start trouble ..
If it was a quality pump.
If it was a parts store reman, then not entirely shocked. Still I'd be considering that the clutch/fan was unbalanced or the clutch locked up or that the belt was overtightened.
Either way, all parts are being covered for replacement, it ran fine the day before and along with the old pump so if the part has China on the box, don't use it.

Ahh. Good news. Unfortunately that's more common than any of us would like.

I totally agree. there had to be stress there to be twisted like that. unless the pump itself was seized inside the housing. that shaft did not "snap", it was twisted...
