Default Wiring harness surgery

Well, I finally got tired of the suffering caused by the crippled wiring harness left in my 68 convert by the PO and scheduled the surgery. The harness put up a valiant last effort, with wires wrapped around heater cables and also with several yards of electrical tape which tried to control the bleeding from cut-off wires. Unfortunately, the harness did not survive and the patient will have to live the rest of its life with a transplant.
A moment of silence please for the old harness. RA

YES...is is gone...but honestly that harness is still very useful...due to many unique connectors that you can only get by buying new harness in some instances.

If you like...when you go and install the new harness...PM me...because there is one thing you might want to look at very closely BEFORE you go and put the new one in.

DUB - thanks- I have enough storage space that I hardly ever throw stuff like this away. All of those plugs and bulb sockets may be of use sometime. When I was going over the Hurst shifter the PO installed, I noticed the nylon bushings on the shift linkage that came with the shifter were still there. I replaced them with the steel ones that I had saved from when I doubled ordered them for my 66 Mustang fastback in 1973 or 1974. I actually knew exactly where they were in my parts bin from over 30 years ago. Now if I could just remember where I put my glasses an hour ago............

That old harness looked ten times better than my old one, in the '74! Keep it!

I would be thrilled if the harness in our '77 looked half that good.

I got very lucky. I'm working on my dash and finally realized the PO put in a new harness but didn't connect the grounds. Awesome find of me. Good luck with yours. My next brain teaser is my wiper system.

All I can say is thank God that someone is making new ones because some of them are just a hopeless case in time lost trying to trace down shorts and inoperable items.

RR- I am hoping that the new harness helps with my wiper problem. The PO removed all of the vacuum operating systems- wiper door and headlight doors- and jury-rigged the wiring and relays. I am hoping that with all wiring in place I can just jump the limit switch on the wiper door and be able to use the wiper switch the way it was intended. The engineer at GM that designed the wiper system was a sick SOB. Good luck with your wipers. RA

bj1k- "some of them are just a hopeless case in time lost trying to trace down shorts and inoperable items. " I agree completely. The PO of my car cut wires so that looking for the "blue wire" sometimes was a waste of time, since it just was not there. I would rather do a complete engine rebuild before tackling electrical problems like this. RA

Bubba got to the interior firewall harness on my 70. He cut out the original radio/stereo wires and the original factory alarm harness and added wiring for a custom stereo addition and a custom alarm system, and then before he sold the car to me (unknowing buyer) he removed all this stuff. I bought a new repro interior firewall harness from Lectric Limited. $512 I think.

Could be worse mine had only 5 of the original plugs from the 1970 spliced onto a 1979 dash harness and the engine harness was 1/2 1970 and 1/2 1979. All connections were twisted together and electrical taped. No wonder half the stuff didn't work. Total rats nest. Went through and fixed everything but decided it's all coming out and getting the correct pieces. Bubba is an A**hole.
