Default Engine Paint marks 1970 Lt1

I'm doing a 70 lt1 and just got done rebuilding the original engine. I can't find in any of the restoration or ncrs book where to apply the paint markings. Is there any guide to this or was this at the discretion of the engine builder or assembly line workers? Thanks

There are identification/paint marks on Chevrolet engines of this era... However, most of them are UNDER the paint.

Having said that, the paint coverage on original engines was pretty poor, so you can generally see the markings... Problem is, almost nobody restores them like that. Restored engines are usually beautifully painted... Which hides anything you may have done underneath.

Regards,

Stan Falenski

On 1970 #00538, it was on the passenger side... Other cars may be different.

Here's another pic of the paint marking visible on a 70 LT-1 Nova.

Hi,
Sorry, I thought cd was referring to paint inspection marks applied after the engine was painted and had made the trip from Flint to St.Louis.
Regards,
Alan

It appears to me that these marking were made using a "crayon"?

Paint identification marks on the cylinder heads of 1970 #16965.

The "X" seems to be typical for LT-1s... I've also seen both open and completely painted circles.

There are other ID marks as well.

Regards,

Stan

It's my understanding the markings begin to show up after the original orange paint begins to wear away. I don't believe they are judged since they do not appear on all engines.
