Hi Rodney,
I believe option NA9 refers to California Emissions Equipment.
For example the ECS canister that became standard on all cars for the 71 model year was installed on 70 cars going to California, and was optional on cars going elsewhere.
Regards,
Alan
I just looke that code up and you are correct. It also further explains that there were only 80 cars with that option built. Now i know for sure that my car was an actual California big block car with the 454 and th400 that was designated on the rear compartment in a previous posting.
I do really wish i had the tank sheet.
The Corvette Black Book lists 1758 cars with NA9 and it cost you an additional $36.90.
Wasnt that as an option Mike?
I was referring to the 80 that were specifically designated by the factory to be sent to California. Which would make sense since mine was sold originally in California and spent its entire life there till i bought it in 2008 and moved it to Arizona.
My information is coming from the corvsport.com website

Did people actually order and pay out of pocket for optional emissions equipment back in 1970-71? (first tree huggers?)
Heck, I thought the thinking was to remove that stuff the day after you took delivery and toss it.
Hence so many A.I.R. systems gone on our cars.
My 68 was delivered to San Diego but the A.I.R components are long gone.
The exhaust manifolds have plugs in them now.
Interesting and informative thread.

Every new automobile ordered into the State of California at the time, had to have the "new" emission equipment installed or could not be sold legally. The additional cost was simply added to the sticker price. It could be ordered (RPO NA9) in any other State and then the buyer would pay the extra costs.
Yes. It's listed as an option in the sense it was not installed on cars which did not require it, but it was required for cars going to California. The cost was added to the price of the car and passed along to the buyer.

Which 80 would that be? Any 70 could be shipped to California provided the NA9 was on it. Destination after leaving St. Louis depended on the location of the dealer who ordered the car.
