I did the conversion last fall. Totally worth it. Put in a super T-10 4-speed. Really wasn't that difficult. Hardest part is the pedal assembly and welding in the z-bar mount.
The purpose of my swap to a Muncie 4 speed with an original shifter was to get back to the feel and drive ability as it was in 75. I think if you want the feel and drive ability of a Honda you should look at a C5 or C6

I don't see any reason why I shouldn't have the feel and drivability of a Honda in my C3.
My story. Replaced the Muncie 4 speed with a Tremac 5 speed. I like the shift feel with the Tremac. There's no way, being in the car, you can tell it's a non-standard Corvette transmission. I have a 3.73:1 rear end and do something like 2000 rpms at 70 mph.
As smooth and slick as most Japanese manual transmissions are, there's nothing like the positive engagements of a good old American external rod 4 speed. Kinda like the thunk you get when you shift a Harley big twin (6 speeds excepted). The newer internal rail 5 and speeds are nice as well. I wish I could say the same about my old Old Chevy with the 4 on the tree. In any case manual transmissions are the only way to go in my opinion.
