I am restoring a 64 which was a pretty worn driver. I figured out It has a 68 radiator in it. I was going to use it since it was cooling fine when I tore the care down two years ago. Now I am rethinking. If anyone is in need of radiator (3155316) with a date code of 68K for their 69 this might be a good use for it. I do not know if it an original but I doubt a repro would have gone into this car since it was not ever properly restored. Lots of mixed parts on the car.
I did not post this in for sale as I do not know what it is. If anyone knows and cares to give advice toward that I may decide to post there.
Hi Greg,
I believe one way to tell the original from the reproduction is the surface of the 'top plate'.
Originals have about a half dozen oval shaped ' indentations/lumps' on them
while
Reproductions ave a smooth surface.
Original radiators in good condition that don't leak are pretty nice to find!
Regards,
Alan
It looks like a mix of the two. I have the oval indents but the date stamp looks like the repro. I'm going to try to clean it up and see how it looks with new paint.
Hi John,
Your pictures show what appears to me be an original radiator.
My picture may have mis-led you.
The date stamp on the small added plate as shown in the pic I posted isn't exactly 'rare', but I see more original radiators with the date stamp directly on the top plate of the radiator.
I've seen 2 radiators with the small plate brazed (?) to the top that have had the plate lifted. Both had an earlier date UNDER the plate than ON it.
If your radiator doesn't leak and the fins are pretty straight, it's a NICE dated radiator for someone!

Alan

Close to the one that I am using. Had it pressure checked and fixed. May not last to long but that remains to be seen. Are you selling that one?
RVZIO
I would consider selling it in favor of getting one right for my 64. I am in the process of cleaning it with TSP and was going to apply a coat of Krylon 1613 to see how it shapes up. I took the label off but still have it. It had been painted over so not sure if I can get the pain off and keep the ink. I was really here looking for advice and if it would be of interest to someone.
I mounted my 69 radiator into the 64 today. It cleaned up nicely. Hope it has not developed any leaks while it sat in my basement the past two years. <br >
Hi gcch,
Looks just RIGHT sitting there!!!
I'm glad you got to use it.
I just put an original radiator I restored in my 71 because I'd replaced THE original that leaked with a DeWitt's. I finally found another original that was in usable condition that I could afford and restore!
Getting the radiator and shroud in by myself seemed to be more difficult than when I did it about 10 years ago….You think being 10 years older had anything to do with it?

Alan
Hi gccch,
Yes, I have plans to attend the Convention this summer.
I will be car-less though.
IF I have it Flight Judged again I would try to have it at the 2021 Convention for it's 50th birthday. That's a really just a dream at this point though. I'm thinking that Convention will be in the West which will mean having to ship the car there. $$$
Thanks for the compliment!
My car is REALLY over-restored, but that only matters when it's Flight Judged…. and I live with that fact.
Regards,
Alan
