Are your light bulbs ok, do the high beams work, have you done any basic trouble shooting of the problem, are your fuses ok, do you have voltage to the lights, are your grounds ok, are your connections to the lights tight and clean? Do you have 12 volts to the switch? Do you have an electrical diagram?
I can tell you that the override switch has nothing to do with your lights coming on. It only lets them pop up with the lights off.
You need to troubleshoot your new switch or the dimmer switch
In trying to help narrow things down. Why did you replace your original switch? Was it because the lights weren't working or because the vacuum part of the switch was'nt working allowing the lights to pop up and you needed to use the override?
If this is the case, then make sure you have the correct switch. Double check the number of connector pins on your new switch to the one you removed. Those have to be exact to match up to your wiring harness plug.
Where did you get the replacement switch? All of the newer switches from most vendors are made in Taiwan and some have been defective. I found this to be true when I replaced my 73 switch. My headlights would cut out after the switch heated up. I ended up finding a Delco Remi OEM used one on eBay at reasonable price and it's been fine so far. I've since bought a few others very cheap to keep on hand. The only vendor I know of now that sells replacement headlight switches made in the USA is Doc Rebuild. If your old switch worked the lights, put it back to see if the lights come on,then you know for sure you have a bad switch. Process of elimination. If the switch checks out, check your dimmer switch as the previous poster suggests. Double check your wiring up front at the lights and make sure to check all your grounds . Hope this helps, good luck!

Jim
A week before a car show I tested my headlight and only 1 low-beam worked, ho high-beams. It was a bit of corrosion on the electrical connections to the headlights. I cleaned them up a bit and they have been fine since then.
