I broke mine trying to get the dipstick out around the m/c, too. (p/b)
Can you take something like an ice pick and tap it between the wall and the tube remnant to make a place you can grab it with needle nose pliers or needle nose vice grips?
Actually I tried that... It wouldn't pull out .. It's in really tight.
I eventually was able to bite into the remaining tube using a drill.. I was able to get my battery powered drill into the space... I got the tube to start turning.. I still couldn't pull it out. I kept on drilling and it eventually fell into the pan....
soooo.. I'm going to have to remove the pan to get rid of the remnants.
So some of you can now tell me "I told you so.. you should have removed the pan in the first place and pushed it out"
you coulda got that with a screw extractor as mentioned, I know late to the party, but if you go to a real hardware store, they will sell them individually, in all sizes (I've got one that is 1.5" diameter), called a "hanson spiral screw extractor". for the next guy who runs into this. put it in and screw it semi tight and wiggle with vice grips or a slide hammer works too...stay away from box stores and the cheap homeowner screw extractor sets, spiral extractors are the way to go.

I'll have to remember that next time I or for anyone who shears off their dipstick tube.... Should've gone to Ace I guess.

they also work really well for soft brass fittings that get broken, and pvc plumbing threaded nipples and stuff. especially if you have a well and the pitless adapter snaps off flush! the coarse threads bite without stripping and making the threads tighter, unlike the fine threaded ones...hopefully it helps someone else.
Just for the record, I had same problem on my 58. I used the apropriate size tap and screwed it into the hole. Then took a vise grip (small) and grabbed the tap then hit upwards with small hammer and it came right out.
Sorry I didn't get to this post sooner. Guess the pan drop is not so bad after all. Let's you see what is going on in there....
There's an upper and a lower piece. The upper is what you broke. It is only pressed into the block about an inch or a little more. I did the same thing once, and here's what I did. Results may vary..
I used a small sharp punch to slightly roll the top edge of the tube inwards toward the center, then screwed a sheet metal screw into it that fit very snug. Then used a small slide hammer to pull up the screw and the tube came with it. If you have any freeze spray like they use in electronics, if you spray the inside of the tube it will contract a little and make it easier.
If you pull the pan, you'll of course have to drain the oil, pull the pan, probably replace the gasket and it will only get you to the bottom piece of the tube. If you get that out, you'll still have to find something exactly the right size to tap up into the hole to knock the upper remnant out.
But you might want to use a large " Easy-out " because it will grip the inside of the piece and also rotate it as you pull upward.
