I wonder if he ever looked for/found a tank sticker? (highly unlikely considering what this car has been thru, right)

Don't think he ever mentioned any chassis VIN #'s. Would that give any useful info or not really? Frame vs dash?

just trying to give this thread a kick

Default Update and question

Sorry I haven’t kept the post updated. Work has kept me hopping.
The General is coming along very nicely. Engine is ready to rock and was fired on a dyno to break it in. No dyno numbers as it was for breaking in only.

Had the radiator checked and it seems to have some leaks in the headers.
Questions

- are these aluminum radiators repairable? If so who and where. Part number in picture. Shop I took it to didn’t want to weld on it due to it being old aluminum
- replacement radiators, reproduction or Griffin? I hate to replace the original GM.

Brakes, fuel system, gaskets bearings..... all being checked and replaced where needed.

Hope to have it running over the next month!!!

Thank you for any and all help

Default Blocks and heads update

The iron block was found to be like new cleaned up and ready to go (they thought it had under 100 miles on it if that) which confirms the information I was told. ZL1 block is waiting.

I wouldn't trust a 50 year old aluminum radiator. The thing has been heat cycled many, many times. Hate to see if let loose with your wheels in the air and all that liquid going under your rear tires. DeWitts makes a correct replacement.

As long as you save original parts, you can always go back in the future. For now, go for function, reliability, and safety.

I don’t own the other car and would like to purchase it to keep and show the two together. Will the cost of reviving the General it has slowed progress.

I thought the red tow vehicle vette had already been put on the market? Is the owner 'holding' it for you?
Your xtra aluminum ZL1 block should be a good down payment, right?

So the cost to replace the radiator with an exact duplicate is $1200A sure fitting Griffin is around $700. It just kills me and everything I have been doing to change anything from how it sits at the moment.
Am I being stupid for buying a $1200 remake on a drag car?

Do you want just a radiator or what was in the car in the time frame from which the restoration you are doing? The DeWitts, to me, is a copy of the original and you can buy the ink stamps to replicate what is now there. I can't speak og Griffiths, but the DeWitts in my 69 427 fit without any issues and runs cool. You have a piece of Corvette racing history. I'd make it as accurate as possible.

This is an exciting thread; congrats on bringing this beast back to life.

I know it has been asked before, but I will ask again, can you post pictures of the engine pads for both the cast iron block and the aluminum block.

I know you said there are no numbers on the aluminum block pad; I would like to see the "grain" of the metal for an aluminum block.

FYI: I had the pleasure of judging the yellow ZL-1 coupe (NCRS) back in the early 1990s when it was owned by Ed Mueller.

I will never forget him jumping in that car and running down to the local convenience store because he needed something to drink.

Wow! I just dropped down from the C4 forums to see whats happening down here. 2 1/2 hrs later I’m still reading this thread. Interesting read. Makes me want to dump one of my 4’s and by a C3.

OP, thanks for the good read. We all have the ‘Vette “sickness”.

Now, now... Let's play nice, boyz...

All Corvettes are "good". Just, some are better than others.
