Hi R,
I don't know if it matters to you or not, but I don't think the tan colored top was an option after 1970.
I think the BHG cars look sharper with the white top rather than the black.

If you can find a picture of a similar car you can use the photo editing features on most phones or computers to change the color of the top. It wont be perfect but will give you an idea. The saddle will look the best to me, then the black. I think the white wood be too much contrast
My better half has a 71 Brands Hatch with saddle leather and beige folding top. It's beautiful.
With saddle leather, I think the beige to would look great. My '71 BHG with dark green interior came with a white top. It still has the original soft top but I keep the hardtop on it year round.
Beige top was available in 1970, but not in 1971. Howver, unless I wanted the car to be in a major judged event, there is no way I would put anything on that car but a beige or saddle color top. Either white or black would be "acceptable"; but neither would give it the class of a saddle top, IMO.
I fully agree... if you are not trying to go for a 100% point NCRS car... either saddle or beige would also be my preference.
(however, if I had to make a decision between white or black I would go with white)
