Were the original LT-1 hood stripes on a '71 painted on or were they decals. Also, where is the best place to buy correct hood stripes for an early '71 LT-1.
Hi rv,
Here's a little more information about the stripes.
The stripes were sprayed either black or white according to exterior color.
The hood stripes for 1970 were two different sizes at the front of the hood. One inner stripe was 1/4-inch wide with a 1/8-inch space between the inner and the 1/8" wide outer stripe.
There was a change to equal width stripes during LATE 1970 model year production.
The first equal-width hood stripe now known is on a 70 model year car car built the third week in July. (So quite a late car.)
From about then through 1972, both inner and outer hood stripes were 1/8-inch wide with a 1/8-inch space between the two stripes.

Alan
Original 71-72 Stripe:
The 'joint' in the stripe was typical because a 3 piece 'mask' was used.
I knew I had info on this somewhere.....I was Vette crazy as a kid....
This is from my 600 page compilation...."The Best of Corvette News 1957-1976" My Father gave me this book when I was 9 years old....
Hi Jebby,
Those are some terrific pictures! Good picture of the mask that led to the 'joint' in each stripe.
I believe they're from the Nov./Dec. 1970 issue of CORVETTE NEWS.
It was the issue in which the 1971 model was introduced.
Interestingly the article states the only 3 different people did all the hood stripes!
Regards,
Alan
You are absolutely correct Alan-san.
This is a priceless collection to me.....I have others...but this one really personifies what Vette's are about.....

P.S. Alan sir...will you look at my "picked up a 72'" thread? I posted something regarding you if you can help.....restoring my headlight mechanism now.....
Yes.....in the text....it say that only three people painted these originally on ALL of them.
How would you like to be one of those guys.....like Ronnie Hunt
