Default Rear storage compartment

Hello everyone, was planning on installing an amplifier in the storage compartment next to the battery. My question is...can I screw it to the back wall? Does anyone know if there are any special hoses I should be worried about nicking? Please let me know.

I installed a amp in the jack compartment of my 79. Spare and jack were removed last year so the space was clean and empty. Instead of mounting to the compartment wall I cut a 2x8 to fit snug in the bottom mounted to that.

Crawl underneath and look up at the area behind the rear wall and the front of the fuel tank. That's all the room you have to play with so you will want some type of short fasteners.

Battery fumes aren't very good for electrical parts (even "sealed" batteries seem to corrode terminals). Use the jack compartment as posted above.

That's the way I did it too.

Thank you all. I plan on installing it in the jack compartment. So it's better to install to the ground of compartment vs the rear side wall?

Where you put it is up to you. Since fiberglass does not provide a ground, you will probably have to run your own.

Not necessarily "better", but depending on the fasteners you use for the amp the less likely you are to puncture the fuel tank.

IIRC there is about 1.5" or so between the back wall of the compartments and front of the fuel tank. You'll have to drill the fiberglass to get the fastener through. Ive read about about people using self tapping screws to mount the amp, drilled right through the fiberglass and into the fuel tank.

I'd mount the amp on a board and lay it flat, obviously depends on the physical size of the amp.

I took "ground" to mean the bottom of the compartment, not an "electrical ground" as in wiring.......

2 screws under the radio, they point "UP". two at the back beside the armrest. IIRC on some years there are to midpoint mounting horizontally, kind of beside your knee when your driving.

I found a soft sided zipper style cooler at the Family Dollar, perfect size, holds a 12 pack if I remember correctly. Maybe someday I'll insulate the compartment and not need the cooler, and put a rubber stopper in the drain hole I drilled in the bottom.

As far as mounting the amplifier- where ever you mount it- it will cool better with the fins pointing up- as heat rises. Especially since the compartment does not have much air movement.

The cooler?

Did that for the Hotrod Power Tour last couple of years-

Used an old Igloo- cut off the handle so it would fit. Then found a soft sided one that fit inside- so it could be easily removed. Will only hold a 6 pack though...
