Default Hood Clearance

I am in the process of installing a GM crate motor ZZ383 in my 1969 small block 4 speed convertible. The high rise intake with Holley 770cfm will not allow me to use stock hood. It looks like I will need close to an additional 3 inches of clearance. I have looked at some of the options from Corvette America and Mid America Motors but am not thrilled with any of them. If I do have to go that route does anybody have any info on quality and fit from either source. Any other ideas such as has anyone custom fit a C2 427 style hood scoop onto the stock C3 small block hood please let me know if that may have worked.

Thanks for any ideas,

Cliff

Almost 19 years ago, I put an aftermarket BB hood bulge on my SB hood, then when glass was done, I hollowed out the old glass from under the new bulge using a router with a bearing on the top, so just guided off the new glass bulge sanded it down, and good to go....

it is about 3" taller under there, not that my FI setup needs it....

i have a long hood off a later model, not nearly as high of a rise as an l-88 hood but fits a 383 with a victor junior intake on it under the hood with about a quarter inch to spare.

Is it a GM hood or a replacement from the catalog companies?

Not knowing if you are still wanting to use the short hood due to your wiper door and grille...or if you are going with a long hood???

YES..the hood 'style' from 73-79 are basically the same...but the hoods are different due to the grille that was removed when GM did away with 'fresh air' being pulled in from the back of the hood by the windshield....and the latch design changed also.

YES...modifying and laminating in a hood scoop of your choosing can be done...it depends on what the hood is made out of (due to different fiberglass resin types) and what the scoop is made out of.

Thanks Dub. I am going to stay with the short hood. I have purchased a C2 427 hood scoop to modify and glass on my stock hood. That along with a couple of other tweaks will give me the clearance I need.
Thanks to all for the information provided to help.

Cliff,

I have done this and also actually raised the 67-427 hood scoop up also so it has a 4" rise...(for example).

If you have this all figured out and can laminate it in....GREAT...if you need advice or further suggestions to get this scoop to look like it was factory made...just post your concerns.
