How many of you guys are getting by with a stock starter with headers? Ceramic coated

My headers are not coated.. I tried 2 Mini Hi-Torque starters , both failed in 6 months.. went back to my OEM starter,...its been years without any issues

doing well with a stock style ac delco replacement starter and home made heat shield.no issues at all.

Very nice work there. I've fabricated more custom starter heat shields than i can remember on various cars. They make a world of difference, that's for sure.

thanks.it is made from a pipe insulation support hanger and ss nuts and bolts.

It turned out great. I used to used Stainless steel sheet and bolts/nuts as well. Simple, clean looking and effective (and not that expensive ! )

no not lined with any insulation.seems to help though as air is a great insulator and it does not touch the starter at any point.

The solenoid is what needs shielding from excessive heat

Default I have stock starter with ceramic coated headers

Have had for years. I had ordered a generic chevy starter shield ages ago and put off installing it for years. Still no problems, but one day I was under there so I installed it. I had to tweak it to fit, so you're probably better off fabricating as shown in post above to begin with.

Anyway, no problems for years.

you would have to think that most of the damaging heat comes it idle while stopped.i never ir gunned it but believe that the shield deflects enough of the heat to help the starter and the solenoid.good point though about the solenoid needing protection as well.
