Default Bubba must have *****???!!!

So I am under the dash looking for the electrical connection to the ignition and I find that Bubba put a tennis ball in an orifice. Can someone tell me what should be where Bubba put his ball? This is the sidewall to the left of the brake petal.

Hi gr8,
That's the outlet in the hinge pillar for the dash pad mounted round air vent.
There's a thin plastic elbow/duct that connects that outlet to the back of the dash pad/duct vent.
Regards,
Alan

There's an elbow/duct at each side of the dash.

Okay, but why stick a tennis ball in it???
Also, look in my original picture, there is another vent just below this one. What is the second vent for?

Hi gr8,
Because the vent in the dash pad has the ability to open and close .
Without the duct the outside air…. hot or cold… was constantly blowing into the car when it was moving.
Regards,
Alan

Alan, did you make your own seals where the vent meets the body? I saw them in my AIM but don't see where anyone makes them. Didn't know how they should fit until now.

Hi b,
I was able to reuse my originals.
Take a look at the Dr. Rebuild catalogue. It shows a drawing of the seals.
#8844150, car takes 2 sets. Dr. R's drawings are the BEST!
You could likely make your own from strip foam weatherstrip from your local 'home store'.
Regards,
Alan

I am still confused.
There is a vent with a tennis ball in it. It can be seen in the picture. Call it Vent A.
There is a vent just below Vent A with a dash louver over it. The louver can be seen in the picture just below Vent A (I was not holding the camera straight, but it is just below Vent A). Call it Vent B.
What is the difference between Vent A and Vent B?
Is there no GM designed means to close Vent A without putting a tennis ball in it? In Florida during the summer, I can understand why someone would plug the vent if there were no other controls for the vent. Should I try to remove the tennis ball? The AC is the car works good now, but if I remove the tennis ball, is 95 degree air going to come into the car unobstructed?

Sorry I have a non AC car so I'm not going to be able to tell you how things work in a car with AC, but in my car the air from vent A goes through the tube that Alan shows and exits out of the vent ***** in the lower dash. Air flow is controlled by the **** that looks like a door lock **** that sticks out of the lower dash. That flapper should probably still be on the back of your lower dash.

Vent B, at least for me, is operated by ***** sticking up through my shifter plate, and it blows air toward my feet.

AC cars don't have those ***** so I don't know if those vents are functional on AC cars

Who knows why Bubba does certain things.

Like the time he decided to detail his Camaro's underside...

Hi g8,
The 2 vents (A) are part of the Astro Ventilation system and are controlled by 'pull' ***** on the dash pads.
The large oval vents (B) behind the kick panels are controlled by the 2 levers on the shifter console plate.
Regards,
Alan

Dash Vent (A) control.

Kick Panel Vent (B) control.

1/4" wide strips of black felt and double-sided tape work great for duct seals. Foam seals will just rot after a few years; felt will stay viable for a LONG time.

The lower vent is controlled by the lever on the center console. The door is on the birdcage behind the louver. The upper vent was open and controlled by a flap inside the plastic tube on 69 and later models I believe. Early 68 only closed if you rotated the ball so there was no flow.

The tubes are available from a few sites. I got mine cheap on flea bay.
