I took my 71 out for a ride tonight. Driving on the highway and my RH mirror falls off. Looks like Bubba had glued it on.
I came home and looked in my AIM. It shows a reinforcing plate that looks like it may be part of the door. I have looked on a few vendor sites for a new mirror but none seem to have the plate.
It looks like I may have to fabricate something.
The passenger side mirror I believe was a option it is secured by well nuts. Most vendors sell the plate, gasket and well nuts. Some sell a mirror kit with plate ,screws and mirror.
Looks nothing like my '73 , that huge oblong hole in your door should not be there, just two holes for the bolts/screws to go through the mirror mounting plate with a backing plate on the inner door then nuts. Does the mirror mounting plate (if you have one) cover that big hole? If it does you may be able use a big enough backing plate to hold everything together but that may be weak. Some fiber glassing may be in order to do it right. Some other members will chime in with hopefully a better solution. Bubba did you no favors with that one.

That is not a large hole. Just fiberglass without paint. I guess Bubba was trying to save paint by not painting under the mirror.

LOL looks like a large hole on my computer screen. So I assume you have the mirror mounting plate and if the door panel is off just back it up with a fabricated backing plate. If your door panel is still on the car your option would be to use the well nuts as previously stated, but I am not a fan of those nuts. Hope this helps.
Did they use super glue...my 69 is a lot like this had those plastic drywall inserts shoved in the holes...worse I wanted to mount a mirror that bolted from the inside of door and there is a plate right there
Hi M,
Since your 71 was originally built with just one mirror the 'nut plate' that secures the mirror base in place was put into just the driver's side door.
Even if you have the nut plate it's difficult to get it in place in the passenger's side door because of it's location on the door.
You could secure the mirror in a more positive way than using the typical well-nuts but that would require the glass being removed from the door so you can reach up to the mirror's location from the access panel in the door.
Not an easy solution!
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
I added a mirror on my passenger side so I fabricated a plate for the bottom and welded nuts on the bottom , then riveted it in place . Not easy to get in there but much better than using well nuts especially if that area is already Bubba'd .
I was gonna go the plate route if my new well nuts wouldn't hold it secure but, they did. My plan was to fab a plate and tack a piece of bailing wire like they use on scaffolding to fish it up there then just break it off.
New mirror is ordered. I guess I will decide how I will install it in a week or so. I have a cousin in the auto glass business so the panel and glass will not be a problem.

Are you close with your cousin? Expect him/her to be a little POed when trying to install a mounting plate where one does not exist. You may not get a Christmas card for a couple of years.

Mike , I just made a plate and drilled where the rivets would be located in the plate . Then before I welded the nuts in place , I used the plate as a template to mark the rivet holes from the outside. Then welded the nuts in place and used an extension magnet to hold the plate in place from the bottom while I riveted it in place. The rivets are covered by the gasket and mirror. Makes a good solid and neat job .
