I was looking at the date codes off my '69 Rallys and I noticed they matched each other, with Oct 1968. That seems like an early wheel. The car is a Nov, 69 car. This would be about 13 months prior.
I know NCRS only judges the spare's date code. It does not say in the JG whether 6 months prior is the max on wheels, per usual on many items, or up to a year like on some glass.
I wonder if GM ran a batch of 1968 wheels and just used them, till they ran out, also does anybody have a 1970 car with 68 wheels?
I have a 69 that was built on jan 11 69 that has the original wheels and they are all dated Dec 20th. I also have a Feb 18 69 built car that has 3 original wheels and they are all dated Jan 15.
That could also be a 78 wheel. Early 69, dated 68 wheels are not common. Is there a BB sized piece of weld on the outer rim?
You can also tell by the font. His are definitely from 1968. Sometimes people make the mistake of grinding off the weld thinking they are cleaning up the rim....
On 1978 rims, the 1's are just a staright bar for the day/month date font with no bar across the top. Also the 8 is much smaller. The K18 looks like K-1-8 with the dashes between for 1978.
Although Vettebuyers K18 looks like a straight bar number 1, its only because the stamping did not come out complete. You can see the cross bar on the "21". On a 78 rim it would have been just a straight line (bar).
Also the K18 is a unique font in 1968 made rims. When they went to K19 in 1969 the K looks like your 1971 font on most rims. The 1's still had the cross top bar type font on both the K19 and for the actual year date numbers like those on the 68 rims. It should also be noted that there are two types of K19 year fonts. Some early K19 stamps had no dashes but they overlapped with some stamps that had dashes. The ones that had no dashes also looked bigger in font size similar to the K18. The second type K-1-9 were smaller and thinner like the 71 rim showed above.
I have a 1978 rim I can take a picture of to illustrate the difference. Its much different.
Here is the 78 rim
