Hi S,
It appears from looking on line that there is some difference between shifters for 68-76 cars and those for 77+ cars…. but I don't know what it is? (Too dumb!)
Regards,
Alan
A 1977 has a Borg T-10 transmission, I believe 74 was still Muncie, and while I think there are some minor differences in the arms on the transmission, I would think the shifter itself is identical....but I can't say for sure.
I have a GM parts manual and I can look and get back to you tomorrow. I feel they are the same...but the linkage is different and previously mentioned.
Though they look alike, they 74 and 77 4 speed shifters are completely different.
The 77-81 sifter handle is about an inch taller than the 68-76 handle. This is because of the different style console used in the 77-81 cars.
The linkage rods and levers are different also. There are 4 different sets of linkage used in 68-81's. 68 Muncie (shared with 66-67), 69-73 Muncie, 74-76 Borg-Warner & 77-81 Borg-Warner. I'm guessing the extra length of 77-81 shifter effected the throw of the shifter, requiring different linkage?
Thanks guys, I got a 74 4 speed parts car. The trans is a Borg Warner that I will rebuild. The shifter appears to be original to the car but I pulled it out to rebuild it and got to thinking it could have been changed. Anyway I cant find any numbers on it to tell if it is a pre 76 or not. Im not going to rebuilding anything until this winter but I am getting excited about the changing the auto out for the 4 speed.

There aren't any numbers on the shifters, that I'm aware of, but if the shifter came out of a 74, I would guess it's a 68-76.
The shifters are pretty easy to identify. Unscrew the ball, and pull out the spring, "T" handle and reverse lock out rod. If it's a 68-76 shifter, the reverse rod will be about 8 1/2" long. If the rod's 9 1/2" long, it's the later 77-81 shifter.
I don't know how well the earlier short shifter will work in a 77. Shifts into 2nd and 4th might get a little close to the parking brake handle, with the shorter early shifter?
If you have a later console car I would advise you to seek the longer shifter lever and then locate the linkage/rods /hardware for the type trannie you use.

About mid year 74 model yea, ra Chevrolet service bulletin was issued detailing the change from Muncie to Warner for Corvette and Z28 . I have an original copy. It also included the introduction of GM HEI for the Z28 mid year.
I have one of each, 74 Corvette with old Muncie M21 and a later production 74 Z with reintroduced Warner M21 Super T10 .
