I am looking for advice on the restoration of an 1976 corvette........it has been in storage for 10 years and was running when 1st stored. My father had been told to sand all the paint off the car.......I've been told that was some bad advice.....should I purchase a body or should I fix the one that I have........what would be the most affordable way to start.
Do you know by what method???? By hand, block, grinder, D/A sander????
We will start there...but I seriously doubt that you need to buy a new body.
DUB
An electric hand sander orbital....... Was used to sand through to the fibre glass through the gel coat as well I believe I don't have the car right now to take pictures as it is still in storage.
Not meaning to be super technical...but this response is for those other members who may read this. So please do not take offense.
A 1976 Corvette does not have gelcoat....actually...no production Corvette had gelcoat applied to it...as like current hand laid fiberglass parts of today.
So I am wondering what it as that you sanded through to get to the raw SMC....which in your case....being a 1976...your body should be a light gray with some dark streaks possibly in the body panels. The bare SMC can look much like marble.
Photos are going to be a great help in this for you due to we need to see what you see.
Whenever you can get them...post them...and hopefully I will see your post and help if needed.
