In Mass they do. When I went to reregister mine, after over 30 years - I had my copy of the title - it took the registry quite a while to find their copy of the title. After several hours I was advised to "come back tomorrow."

What a mess, your only solution may be to pay an attorney...

SO..you need a DUPLICATE title to replace the one LOST..
DID you attempt to get PA motor vehicle dept to get you a duplicate title, using what is supposed to be the correct Vin ( no 'U')?
Sounds like you tried using the VIN as stamped on the car which no one could recognize..
Don't suppose you have an old registration or old tag from back when?OR old insurance paper from whomever you had it insured with back when..Jim
Have you contacted the GM Archive people?

The GM Archive will have nothing on 1969 Corvettes.
And even if they did it would not help him prove he owns the car in question with that VIN or any other VIN.

I imagine it will all work out eventually as they will finally figure out that there is no deception, but it will clearly be a multipronged drawn out affair.

Good luck

OK, now it makes sense.

You have to apply for a duplicate title (you already know that), but you also have to get the state to agree that the VIN on your car is accurate (because it does not follow the correct sequence for a 1969 Corvette).

Take a picture of the VIN tag, be sure that the picture also includes the rosette rivets, and take it with you to the DMV.

Explain to DMV that this is a typographical error in the VIN when the car was made, and ask them how to proceed.

You might also want to get a letter from a Corvette authority that, in the opinion of the Corvette expert, this is a real typo in the VIN.

Where in Pennsylvania do you live? I know a couple of real Corvette authorities in Pennsylvania I can point you at.

This issue has come up before, and in the cases where it did come up before, the car HAD to keep the VIN tag that was on it.

That is the tag it was made with.

Trying to change the title so that it "corrects" the VIN typo is not going to happen. The title must match the VIN on the car.

Some states may require the a state issued VIN tag to replace a bad VIN tag.

OK, I found the form you need. It is Pennsylvania Department of Transportation form MV-41 Application for Correction of Vehicle Record or Verification of Vehicle Identification Number.

You need to complete sections A, B and F of this form that apply to Correction or Verification of Vehicle Identification Number.

Google PA DOT form MV-41, and it is pretty self explanatory.

Good luck.

That is definitely a head scratcher. Finding information on an older car with a 13 digit vin is really difficult. I found an old registration card for a new 1974 Firebird that I bought new, and I wanted to find out whatever happened to it. I took the number down to our local police dept (I know two officers), and they ran the number through their system and it came up empty. Good luck!

Hopefully your law enforcement friends won't get in trouble for this. It is definitely frowned on these days.

Go to add123.com and enter the VIN of your Firebird. It will tell you if the car is still registered anywhere.

Sad to say I have no paper work at all the car was bought and put in a garage and sat for 20 years, I did contact GM in St. Louis where the car was built they had a fire many year back and any paperwork from 1975 and older is was destroyed in the fire.

What are your plans for the car? If you are only looking to build a nice driver you may need to have a state issued VIN. The other option is to buy a parts car with a title and then use the pieces from your car to build the parts car. You didn't say what the car's condition is but looking at the tag it looks rusty. I have a friend who basically built a '65 around very little more than a birdcage that had a VIN and title. Best of luck. If you can post some pictures of the car that would be appreciated.
