I am trying to remove the passenger panel that has the map pocket. I have removed all the screws including the two by the door opening, but the panel appears to be getting hung up on the Vent and the vent open\Close ****. am I missing something? I dont see how to remove the vent and ****. how do i get this panel off?
Door sill plate and kickpanel also need to be removed, I believe. The vent assembly should stay with the panel and slide off the duct-tube, unless someone has glued it together or the foam seals have bonded the parts together.

No. does that just unscrew to the left? Seamed tight and didn't want to break it. Also...what about the vent. I don't need to take the vent rotation ball off?
Hi W,
The lower right corner of the panel that has the astro-vent in it also has a flexible plastic duct/elbow that leads from the air plenum in the cowl to the back side of the round vent.
This duct is a 'slip' fit but can sometimes hold the dash pad tightly in place.
7T1 is right… the kick panel can hold that corner of the pad too.
Regards,
Alan
Here's the duct I describe shown with the dash pad removed. You can see the gapping round opening that slides on to the rear of the astro-vent.
Looking up from below with the dash pad still in place.

Yes, it is threaded and unscrews at least mine did on the 73. I'm sure they are all the same. It is probably just stuck from age. Just as Alan's great pictures show, the vent ball stays intact and the duct just slides out.

Got it out! Thank you all. Replaced all five lights with LED bulbs. Getting ready to buy and replace Radio, and Need to replace fuel gauge and Clock. A little patience and help from my 17 year old and i got it out. I needed to take the nuts off the radio controls. This was hanging me up.
See pictures. Thanks again.

The clock.. quartz convert it..
The fuel gauge? Why are you wanting to replace it? What does the gauge do? With the key in the on position, let the gauge tell you what is wrong with it.. Then attack the issue. You'll find tons of fuel gauge help on my repair site at this link.
I will most definately convert my clock to quartz.
One question. If you change the speakers to aftermarket ones do you need to change or remove anything else too? Like convectors?
I have aftermarket radio but speakers are not good.

I have to look at new front speakers. I got the bar for the back and i have a Bazooka base tube. I used this in my jeep and loved it. I also need to find a Radio (Thinking about retro sound model 2), but thats a whole new thread. I also replaced all the bulbs in center console with LEDS while im in there. How i can get this all back together.

OK...so the needle is way past Full. I tested the leads (one has 12v, the other from the sender is showing 58ohms). This is leading me to believe its the gauge. As for the clock....i havent decided what to do. I do get 12v to the one lead on that attaches to the clock. Ill update once i come up with a plan.
If you just change out the dash speakers, you MUST install speakers with 8 to 10 ohm impedence. If you install 4 ohm speakers, you run the risk of burning out the amplifier section of your stock radio if you turn the volume up high. Nothing else needs to be changed in the system.
If you want better sound from your radio, you can install ADDITIONAL speakers in the kickpanel areas along with the dash speakers. If you do this, you can purchase 4 ohm speakers for dash and for kickpanels and wire each side in SERIES. That will yield the 8 ohm speaker impedence the radio wants to see for right and left speaker (sets). 4 ohms speakers are readily available, and adding the kickpanel speakers will make your radio sound terrific. Just mount the kickpanel speakers to the metal body struts behind the kickpanels and reinstall the panels over them.
All - Making progress. Thank you Willcox, fuel gauge is now fixed. I have the console removed (see pic) and would like to touch up the pain. Any thoughts on how to do this and what paint to use? this is the original Metal Console.
Yes... strip the paint off of it, and the use an acid etching primer. Once it's dry then coat it with a color coat of semi-gloss black. I think the part number is 7777 krylon.
When it's dry take a razor blade and trim off the chrome edges including the letters at the radio.

This may sound dumb....do I need strip and acid etch? Could I clean with mineral spirits or alcohol and paint?

I'd use paint stripper and some number 3 grade steel wool to get it clean, then wash with some good soap and water. Once dry put a coat of acid etching primer on it, then your color coat.
