Default C3 Rally wheels colour

Does anyone know what colour exactly the original silver rally wheels were, and please dont say silver? I'm after the name or paint code of the original colour.

My rally wheels were repainted a few years ago by the previous owner in like a charcoal grey. Personally I think they look better in the original silver.

Thanks all

Hi cz,
The wheel color depends just a bit on what year your car is.
For instance the color on 70 wheels is different than that on 71-72 cars.
Regards,
Alan

Hi,
You might want to look at this thread and if you're happy with the look of the 72 wheel photo RR included send him a PM for info about the paint used on them.
For many people the rally wheel paint that the larger vendors distribute is a good choice.
Regards,
Alan

Hi cz,
The discussion about rally wheel color often gets muddled because the greenish hue that 70 rally wheels were compared to the bright silver hue of 71-72 rally wheels.
Various vendors sell a very acceptable bright silver rally wheel paint in aerosol cans.

Alan

If you are not taking it to the Monterey event or an NCRS gathering, no one will notice and no one will care.

If it is important to YOU, contact NCRS for their preference of color for your model (and S/N) vehicle. That preference may, or may not, be what came on your car from the factory; but it should be what THEY want if you go to an NCRS event.

If it is NOT that important to you (like the vast majority of Corvette owners), just get a spray can of "Argent Silver" and have at it.

I would just like to keep the car as original as possible. I'm doing some mods to the engine for more power however I'll be keeping all the original parts so it can be put back to original in the future. You're right though, whether its argent silver or just silver there's probably not a lot of difference.

I`m with you... as original as possible, BUT with a few slight mods. I found an "Argent Silver" at AutoZone for a few bucks....but it had the "F" word on it. I used it anyway. It looks very close to what it should be, and like 7T1 says, I doubt anyone will notice.
There... I said it. I openly admitted I have a Ford type product on my beloved Corvette.
I feel so guilty, and yet relieved at the same time.

Thanks. I might be able to take that code to the paint shop and get them to make up some paint to put in some aerosol cans as acrylic.

That gets you the paint colors; now, what is the mix ratio to get it exactly like the factory?

$100 worth of paint; $1000 worth of trouble...all for what a $6 spray can of Argent Silver can do.

I came up with this formula with the help of PPG historians
Wes
Add a very small amount of this to get green tint
I used and original 68 spare tire and wheel to come up with correct match

All are argent silver
As you see very little is visable when done and original wheels had some runs in paint

Finally got around to painting my wheels back to original colour. To do them perfect it would've been better to get them sandblasted first but I couldn't be bothered with all that stuffing around. In the end they came out pretty good anyway.

Here's the old and new colour.

And what they look like on the car.

They look heaps better the original colour I think.

Hi Co,
Your second 'update' post... and this looks good too.
I see your trim rings are safely installed, so you're good!.
Originally the wheel balancing weights were installed only on the inside edge of the wheel lip to insure that the weight wasn't right where one of the balance weights was, or that the weight stuck out a little too far so cause the ring to stick out too.
Car really does look nice in those photos!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan. Those trim rings are actually the stainless ones. My car had the original ones on it when I got the car however they had a few dents in them.
