I'm in the process of painting the bumperettes on my '77 with VHT SP027 Black Hood, Bumper and Trim Paint. The color is 'satin black' and looks like it's pretty much the correct OEM matching sheen.
While I'm at it I was going to hit the windshield trim with the same paint but as I look at it, the windshield trim seems to be a 'flatter' black. Or maybe it's just really beat from 40 years of washing and sun. Was satin black the correct color for that trim of was it a flatter sheen than that?
.
Hi r,
I believe the same paint was used on all the trim.
The difference you're seeing after so many years could be due to a variety of reasons such as different parts having paint from different batches on them.

Pages 493-494 of the assembly manual shows the black exterior painted parts. It calls for WA25X-848 flat black on items 1-11. I can't find what they did with the bumperettes. I had a heck of a time keeping my fronts from fisheye. Took several attempts light sanding, wax and grease remover, light sanding etc. Rears had no problem. I just used a satin black on all my exterior parts, been years ago now they all look semi flat.
Look at the inside of the forward door where the panel stops and is painted. That might give you the best original color sheen that you are looking for.

I've only done the rears so far and had no problem. I'll be doing the fronts probably tomorrow. Don't see how the front bumperettes should be any different. Guess I'll find out.

Thanks for the idea to look at all the other areas where the manual says to paint "flat black". None of them are close to what I would call flat. Much closer to satin. I might look around for a black with a little less sheen than the satin I'm using on the bumpers but I won't hesitate to use the VHT satin if that's all I've got.
Oh, the front bumperettes are done, no issues.
My recollection of these cars [when new] is that the bumperettes were painted semi-gloss black, rather than satin (or semi-flat). My memory is fairly clear on that, as I thought they stuck out like a sore thumb being that glossy.

Does anyone on the forum know where you can purchase the black window trip paint for a C3 1978 corvette?
Thank you
