What was stamped first?
Engine Identification or Engine Number & Partial VIN
I have just seen a 1971 454/365 with the Engine number stamped first and the engine identification number stamped last with a partial overlap of the last character.
It seems logical to believe that the engine identification would be stamped prior to the engine number/vin.

I agree with your logic that the engine stamp goes on first and then when the engine hits the assembly line to be mated with a vehicle the partial VIN would go on.
Engine date/suffix stamps were done first at the respective engine assembly plants. The engines were then shipped to St. Louis. The VIN derivative stamp was second, once the car was on the assembly line.
CPJ is the suffix code stamped at the engine plant. The C11 number is the VIN derivative stamped at St. Louis after the engine had been assembled. Granted, there is usually some separation between the two stamps, but what you have is not otherwise suspicious.
Hi St,
Since the stamp done at the engine assembly plant and the one done in St.Louis were both done with hand held 'gang holders' there may be a bit of variation where on the pad they appear, although there were guide lines as to where they were intended to be. (they weren't done wherever the worker felt like doing it.

Alan
