Why do I have to rev engine when I first started it, to get alternator to Charge? I need to add it,s an 82 C3. Once charging , it's good until it is shut off.
Thanks, Jim

Could be a bad/dying alternator. Have you tested it?

Sounds like it could have been converted to a "one-wire" system - what you describe it typical behavior.

Why do you think that it isn't charging? Your car has a voltmeter in it, not an ammeter. Once started and idling, what does the voltmeter read? If 13.5 volts or higher, it is likely charging just fine.

because when I start it, the meter shows 12 volts.

Yes, you have some problem with the alternator. It could be anything from a loose belt to a bad regulator module inside the alternator...or a bad diode. Suggest that you remove it at take it to an alternator shop. Taking it to an auto parts store is a losing proposition, as they will find a problem and sell you one--even if there is nothing really wrong with it. But, if you know of an honest/reliable store that knows how to check one right and will tell you the truth, great.
