I'll kind of reiterate what everyone here is saying... I had Flowmaster 40s on my mildly modded 79. Replaced them with Thrush Welded, virtually identical sound. Deep rumble at idle, sound great when you get on it, but just a little loud in the cabin on the highway. I switched to MagnaFlow over the summer. They have a nice sound at idle, definitely quiter than the Thrush or the Flowmasters. But I'm not really th rilled with the overall sound. Just not as "meaty". I'll probably end up going back to thw Thrush. I don't think you can beat them for the money. But I'll stay with the MagnaFlow for now and see if they grow on me, and possibly the sound will deepen a little as I get more miles on them.
Try installing an H pipe....I felt the same way when I switched to magnaflow from flowmaster ....The H pipe will deepen the sound a little but flowmaster chambered exhaust I still think is the best muffler for that old school sound....
BTW the longer you use the magnaflow it will have a deeper sound due to the packing wearing out...

We use a custom blend of stainless steel packing in our mufflers, so you wont see them wear or blow out like cheaper units with fiberglass packing. They will, however, become deeper after the first 1k miles or so as the packing material becomes heat cycled and broken in!

I had Flowmaster 40s on my 383 l48 w/ H pipe. Had a good low rumble to it and nice/throaty at wot. It was pretty loud though. The low bass rumble was around 2000rpm and below, it'd rattle some of the stuff on the walls when backing into the garage. I didn't and still don't drive the vette daily so I really mind it a bit loud.
I can't speak for magnaflow on my C3 but I do have their ss muffler on my 05 gmc 5.3 sierra and my 99 ws6 trans am daily drivers. They do get a little louder the 1st few weeks of driving. Both the truck and ws6 have a great sound to them that isn't stupid loud outside the car and very mellow inside. They do seem to wake up under wot. Perfect muffler for daily driver. I'm sure they have all different kinds that range from mellow like above to loud too.
Video below is with my 383, headers and the flowmaster 40 series. Around the 1:40 mark.
