Default Are these original 72 casting numbers

Hi all,

Been working on the rear end today of my 72 Coupe. I have a couple of casting numbers that I would like to clarify whether these are original please. I'll have more to add when I come across them.

Rear calipers brand- Delco Moraine CN-5473807

Also I found some stamps on my wheels. Be nice if these were the original wheels the car came out with or aftermarkets?

Casting number- GM K12

Hi Coz,
I believe the casting numbers for the rear caliper halves used in production during the 70-72 era was 5452284 (outer) and 5452281 (inner).
The original rally wheels are typically stamped near the hub and also near the valve stem.
Here's an example of the coded stamps typically found near the stem and what they indicate..
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan. I'll have a look tomorrow near the valve stem to see if there are anymore numbers.

Here's a great chart for reference....

CORVETTE

BRAKE CALIPER CASTING NUMBERS

1965 - 1982

"First-Design"; 1965 and 1966 (and some very early 1967s, first few hundred Corvettes)

"Second-Design"; 1967 - 1971 (and some very early 1972s, first few hundred Corvettes)

"Third-Design"; 1972 - 1982 (the most common calipers on m Corvettes)

First Design Second Design Third Design
Front inner 5465954 5452270 5473795
Front outer 5495952 5452273 5473796
Rear inner 5465902 5452281 5473806
Rear outer 5465905 5452284 5473807

Mines a late 72 Coupe so the third design matches what I have.

I presume the outer is meaning the outer part of the caliper? Inner being the inside part of the caliper? I've only ever heard of 1 casting number for the whole caliper, not separate casting numbers for 2 halves

I plan to check the rotor runout on the fronts as well, I'll check those casting numbers too

Hi Coz,
If you think about a 'complete caliper' has to have 2 casting numbers because the 2 halves for each caliper aren't symmetrical, so need 2 different castings/ 2 different numbers.
The complete caliper 'assembly' can have a single part number but is made of individual parts with their own casting numbers.
The 'assembly numbers' in the 71 AIM are 5452266/7 for a front caliper (there are right and left assemblies) and 5452268/9 for a rear caliper (there are right and left assemblies).
The assembly number doesn't appear on the caliper.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan. So much to learn on these cars but I'm enjoying it.

Ok took a photo of the numbers on the wheel today. Please tell me if these are original wheels which I suspect they are?

Looks like the numbers are K12 5 16 AZ. Car is a July 72 build with L10 on the build plate.

My car is also a July 1972 build, L13 on the trim tag
I have the exact same numbers stamped by the valve stem hole as you do, so yes...I would agree those wheels are the ones that came with your car when new!

Thanks Roy.

I'm guessing your last 6 digits of your vin are pretty close to 526000 then?

Awesome, our cars were built within 3 days of each other and the vin tag is 300 apart.

Cool info. Mine's a 2 Feb build LT-1 and it's stamped K12 1 14 AZ.

Always wondered if my wheels were original. Looks like they are!

Yep sure does. Interesting that your wheels were cast in January for your build date of February. Mine were cast in May for my build date of July.

Probably pretty normal I guess as they would have had less rally wheel stock at the start of the year versus the middle of the year.
