Correct Baldwin Motion stripes
Lets face it at this point even mr motion couldnt prove how the stripes were laid out on each car when newly done then add to that mix decades of real motion cars being restored and the myriad of clones and wanna bes..lots of people liked that basic paint layout..what do motion stripes look like...grab an old car magazine with one in it...thats what they look like....."correct"?!...depends on who you ask.
THIS IS THE WAY I WOULD LIKE MY VETTE TO LOOK LIKE!!!! I love the way the car Looks with the wheel tire Combo and all... Are those 81/2 in the back? and does anybody know what the tire size would convert to? 275/60/15? It Looks wider than 255/60/15, but not as tall as 275/60/15... Anyway it Looks perfect to me!!! I just slobbered on my Keyboard... Shame on me

I actually really like how the stripe just folds over a little onto the taillight panel.
I would love to know if your dad was inspired by motion or it was his own idea, could be his own thing,
Example: the motion phase hood....c3 bb hood 67 bb scoop on top fill in front dips motion makes it famous...however people did that on their own before or the same time motion did but motion gets or takes credit,

You can't look at what they restored cars are now because they are not the same as when new, if that is something anyone cares about.
If you want to see how they were originally laid out you need to look at pictures of when the cars were knew. I have just about every CARS magazine from the 60s and 70s and they have lots of pictures of when the cars were just made.
There were many various "types" of stripes and I'm not sure the customers actually had a hand in choosing. As for the 10-11 or so Phase III GT cars they had a few variants but a few were similar.
Some had the rear stripe over the side of the car going inside the bumper, then it had a thin stripe over the roof same width as the hood stinger. If the side stripe was outside the rear bumper, then it was a thick stripe over the rear deck and thinner onto the roof. The pointed arrow stipes were different.
The only cars that I had seen originally that had the U shaped hood stripe was the Daytona Yellow car and the Gold car. The orange cars didnt have them but they have them now on the cars.
The pic of the stripe going over the edge of the rear fenders were on the later 70/71 cars from what I remember.
I have pics of cars from when they were in my neighborhood as a kid. I don't show them anymore. I was a member of Yenko.net some 15 years ago and showed a few back then. i am aware of cars that were made that I dont think anyone knows about and they haven't turned up yet. They might still be out there in someone's back yard near me rotting away, who knows.
I have been into these cars for over 40 years and seen many when they were still driving around in Massapequa. Just didnt have any money to buy them when I was a kid, then they dissappeared. I live about 1 mile away from Joel's house when he lived on Long Island.
I will always like the cars.

.
I never thought joel knew much about the cars he had made.
If there is no documentation then the cars found rotting in a back yard are just another custom,
Ask wes about getting documents from rosen.
Do you have the issue of cars trashing the work done on a motion car...they dont name motion but make it clear it was motion they are bashing.

I hate even getting into it anymore. Yes, docs are everything, but then again if it just so happens to be from Baldwin Chevy, which can be proven without the need for Joel and his ransom then who knows.
Do you mean the issue with "cats" trashing the work? If someone doesnt like it thats there personal taste, have nothing against that. I happen to like the cars and the way the look and perform for what they are. It was a time of crazy customizing. As much of a Puritan people think I am, I like the customs. If something is original, I think its wrong to chop it up. But for a car that's already been through the wringer, why not!
I give Motion lots of credit for doing what they did. They made great cars, and Joel did his homework with marketing. Not for everyone but back then they were what many people wanted if they could afford it. And being invoiced through a Chevy dealer made them very interesting and legitimate. More than just a custom. Today they have a historical value but I think the dollar value might start tapering off as it has a certain style that might not continue to be in demand. Being an old guy and growing up with them, I like it, but maybe not everyone does anymore.
I know I PM'd you about some things about awhile ago. I still never told you the whole story. One of these days I'll PM you with more details. I just still have a bad taste in my mouth about some past experiences on a personal level. That's whyI just stopped getting too involved with these threads until pretty recently.
He was involved with some really cool cars
Its super sad to me that basically all the tales people tell me of personal experiences do not paint a very positive picture of the man or how he did business
The car mag i am recalling i am 99% sure was cars if not it was that type rag it had a story calling motion something like shop x showing the car with telling valve covers and fly eye etc trashing the crappy workmanship and poor tuning...

As far as popular some well documented customs will always do well the trend i see in c3s is modding, a little or a lot very few are doing bone ncrs stock,
Mods are beating stock at auctions because people want cars they can drive that are a bit more modern in the drive trains...enter the restro mods

The book Motion Performance Tales of a Muscle Car Builder by Martyn Schorr seems to be sold out and it looks like copies are going for about $200 on Amazon.
The pictures in the book do show that the stripes varied.
CARS Magazine was popular up in the north east. As far as I can remember Mr Schorr was always pretty kind to the Motion cars.
