Default AC/Heater control faceplate

I have a 72 Stingray, with AC. The console heater/AC control panel lamp didn't work (and never has)so I checked it out. The lamp is OK but doesn't illuminate the heater control panel. I can see the bulb is lit from under the panel but the light doesn't come through. The shifter panel lamp shines through as does the ash tray lamp. I am assuming the heater control panel should light up as well. When the driving lights are on every lamp on the dash and console control panels are lit except for the heater control panel.
There is a lamp and socket on the control panel but I cannot see any way the lamp when lit can shine through.
Anybody seen this before?
Thanks

The lamp may have slipped out of the mounting hole in the underside of the control. There is nothing in between the lamp mounting hole and the faceplate.

Hi Jim,
I taking it that the lamp socket is in it's proper place in the round hole in the bottom of the a/c controller….. is there ANY chance that the clear lens that the light shines through has gotten painted?or covered in some way so the light can't be seen????
Regards,
Alan

This hole?
Just saw this pic on caskiguy's thread!!!

Yes Alan, the lamp socket is in the proper place, and the clear lens looks to be clear. I can see into the socket cavity from the bottom and shine a light up into that space and do not see any light at the top.
I will check further but don't see any paint or other possible obstruction other than that the housing is not made for light to pass. Weird.

I've looked again, and there is no way for light to enter the heater display panel. Someone has been in there before - a screw missing - and I cannot get to all the screws to remove the top cover. The heater control unit is all wired up and all the air/vacuum hoses are connected, and, I don't want to remove the console. There must have been a spacer between the lamp cavity and the heater/AC display cover.
Is there another clear panel between the top cover and the lamp cavity?

So the light is designed to shine up and around a black cover plate that sits just under the clear plastic indicator plate. The black plate provides the backgroud for the letters in the daylight. With the lights on the black plate lets little light pass though. Unless your clear plastic cover plate is "newish" then what little light that makes it to the plate will not illuminate the reflective lettering.
A new clear plastic indicator plate helps but it's still very difficult to see.
There's a thread that recommends drilling some holes in the black cover plate. I tried that and while it does let more light through the tiny hole tend to look like little leds - not a good fix in my opinion.

Thanks Fred... Kinda what I figured - poor design..
I thought about drilling but wasn't sure if it would be effective or if it would really work. Guess I'll leave well enough alone!!
Thanks again for the info.
