There is no way to definitively tell what engine came from the factory once the original is gone. There are signs of SB vs BB, line fuel lines, diff end caps and sway bars, but nothing on the engine itself.
FWIW: factory documentation with the car is about the only way to know what it might have been. Keep in mind L-89 only refers to the optional aluminum heads. You had to have the L-71 to start.
Hi All, I'm looking at a 69 L89 coupe with NOM drivetrain & no documentations. How can I tell that it's a real L89 car?
Well there IS documentation. ALL 69 Corvettes have a build sheet attached to the top of the gas tank (called the "tank sticker"). So, first I would look there. If the tank has never been dropped, it should still be there. If it is not, then ask for an explanation. Pull the rubber cuff back on the fuel filler, and shine a light under the rear deck onto the top of the gas tank to see if it is still there.
