Default Buying interior, need shipping help

Since I'm new to this, I was hoping some of you seasoned people could help me. I will be buying interior pieces (including seats) from another forum member. What are the cheapest options of shipping that you have used? Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Hi V,
I'd think that for seats the best option would be to take them apart so there are 4 pieces, and package each separately.
I'd then think that they could be shipped by normal means… Fed-EX, UPS, USPS.
Have you agreed with the seller who's going to pay for the packaging? And who's going to do the packaging? The seller or the shipping point?
Is it your responsibility to arrange the shipping?
Regards,
Alan

Touch base with Greyhound Bus. I understand they will ship.

Check in the for sale section, there is a forum postal service sticky. Not sure where your stuff is going to and from but maybe someone could help. If it's north to south I will be making a trip shortly and will post that when I know more specifics.

This the only time that I have to disagree with Alan. If you break the seats down and ship each piece individually, the costs will be much higher. Custom made boxes can be made from large appliance boxes by cutting and folding, and using fiber reinforced tape to strengthen the packages. UPS has a weight limit of (I believe) 100 pounds. I've shipped differentials for about $80. Your best bet is to go to a "UPS Store" or other shipping business with weights and dimensions and ask them for advice.

then you are getting into a day of labor to ship boxes.. depends on what you want to do... visiting stores, buying materials, filling out forms, getting shipping estimates, buying insurance, selling used parts to someone you don't know who may not like the quality of the product you just shipped him, disputing the charge..
I would sell something 100$ less if I don't have to ship...
can you just go get it?

I'm the buyer and I live in Wisconsin and the seller lives in California. I've looked into Greyhound, and UPS. I was told that I should look into LTL's as well. The seller hasn't shipped large items before so I was trying to help him out...plus it benefits me in that I get to save money finding the least expensive service. I have no idea who is doing the packaging, paying for that, or anything. We're just discussing parts right now and their prices, but trying to get everything figured out ahead of time. Thanks for all the advice so far!

Trucks are tall, and they can stack 600 other boxes on top of yours. But the cargo area of a bus is under the floor... much less chance of squishing your box. Plus, they take odd shaped packages. I`ve used Greyhound to ship fenders & bumpers in the past. Much cheaper than by truck. Biggest draw-back is seller has to drop it at a bus terminal, and buyer has to pick it up at the bus terminal on the other end.

fwiw , i ship oversize boxes on a fairly regular basis , fedex is the way to go , they are cheaper than ups and easier on both ends than greyhound. my best guess is you will not get too close to the weight limit but have some large boxes , they have a calculator on the fedex website that is very accurate on prices. i have searched exhaustively and they are the best bang for the buck.

I understand from other forums that Fastenal hauls freight for individuals on their trucks. Heard it is a whole lot cheaper than regular freight LTL or UPS or Fed Ex. Haven't used them but a lot of people have.

You have to determine if it’s worth it when you could get new items with free shipping from most venders. What else are you wanting to ship? Are you just talking seat frames?

Break the seats down and pack (2 boxes), dash pad (1 box), lot of other stuff (6 boxes)

Looks like you have about 9 or so boxes to ship USPS, FedEx, UPS, or Greyhound.

I'm guessing about $250 in shipping.

For the size of the interior parts usually UPS or FedEx if you have a friend who has a daily pickup rates acct that would be the cheapest rates, if not sign up for one at either company otherwise you will be charged at retail rate. Then you can email him the shipping labels. Mostly it’s best to send 1 large box rather than a bunch of small packages, so you want to get as much in 1 box as possible but packed safely which you are relying on someone else. More than likely your package is going to be based on size rather than weight your items are large with relatively not much weight. For example if the shipper buys a large wardrobe box say 47x24x22 the dimensional weight on that box is going to be 179 lbs chargeable rate (47x24x22 = 24816 divided by 139 = 179 lbs) regardless of weight if it less. So if it where to fit in that size box shipping from CA to WI will be $177.22 plus box & packaging. Hope this helps.
