Hi EM,
In this case it's a shame it's been repainted.
It would have been interesting to see how it was done compared to the production two tone paint.
Regards,
Alan
I do not believe that is one of the 80 factory 1980 Two-Tone pilot line cars.
First off, the car is to early. Everything I remember seeing on the 80 Two-Tones, indicated they were built in July, near the end of the model run. That car was built the beginning of May.
The details about the Two-Tone pilot program were contained in Chevrolet Service Bulletin 80-I-68, dated July 1980. The Service Bulletin states; "These special "E" paint codes will be stamped on the body I.D. plate". According to the Service Bulletin, if that car was one of the Two-Tone Silver/Charcoal painted 1980 pilot cars, the trim tag would have shown the paint code(s) as "E33 E39", not "SPEC".
Here's a link to Service Bulletin 80-I-68 at the Corvette Action Center website.
I think that 1980 may have "just" been an 80 ordered in a special, none production color, not one of the pilot Two-Tones? It would be interesting to see a build sheet or window sticker for that car.

I have the 80 VIN numbers that were part of the "CORVETTE ENAMEL TEST PROGRAM; PHASE I, II and III. I don't believe there was a body plate that indicated this!!!!
Attached is the data from the 1980 Corvette Enamel Test Program, General Motors Assembly Division, St. Louis, Phase I, II and III conducted between July 21, 1980 - December 23, 1980.
I'm kind of relieved that mine isn't one of those, now I don't feel as bad that the paint is shot! And I will not feel bad about painting it one solid color.
The car originally posted in this thread that I sent to Easy Mike from eBay. I saved all of the pictures of it that were posted with the ad. The VIN number matches #12 of that document that was posted. It's considered a "paint pilot" because it was experimental to help with the upcoming two tones for 1981 and 1982.
Paint "Pilot" cars were not painted on the assembly line; they were painted in the Caprice paint booth. At the time, GM had shut down Caprice production in St. Louis!
