Early year C3 problems?

I almost feel the opposite at least for a reputable dealer that perhaps you are getting a more vetted car. The dealer I bought mine from has sold quite a few vette's and is an owner himself and pointed out all that was right on a lift.
Not to say a private owner could not do the same....its down to buyer beware but I would not rule out a dealer especially a classic car dealer.
