If you look under brake booster way down you will see the engine and light portion of the harness

Everything forward of the firewall is for the engine and front lighting and everything from under the dash where the fuse block is goes to feed everything from the firewall back like the dash and rear lighting. The two harnesses can be split apart on the outside under the master cylinder by removing the center bolt on the harness and pulling apart.

Hi,
In addition to the forward lighting harness and engine harness that connect at the fuse block there are a couple of additional wires that pass through the firewall in grommets… the back up lights connection, and fiber-optics bundle (which looks like a wrapped harness bundle) come to mind.
Regards,
Alan

Hi,
For the back-up light connection the grommet is removed from the firewall so the wire and connector can be pulled back through the hole into the interior.
For the forward fiber optics the cables must be disconnected from the lens in the shifter console so the cable can be pulled forward through the grommet/hole into the engine compartment. Or, the cables disconnected at the lights and the cable pulled into the interior.
Regards,
Alan

Alan , I'm confused on this one. My wires for backup light switch on my 72 don't go through the grommets . The wires come off of the engine harness to a plastic plug . From there it goes under the firewall to the reverse switch on the transmission.

Hi,
Typically:
The 4-speed back-up light wire is part of the dash harness. It has a SHORT lead and connector that comes through a grommet in the firewall. It in the same grommet as the oil pressure line and tachometer cable.
The back-up light switch on the transmission has a LONG lead and comes up in the transmission tunnel and makes the connection a few inches from the grommet.
Regards,
Alan

The lead coming out through the grommet is wrapped, but the lead going down to the switch isn't.

Hi yvh,
The AIM can seem pretty overwhelming… but there's a tremendous amount of information contained in those drawings.
Perhaps you could flip through it some evening to see what's there and how it's layed out.
Then when you have a question about how something was assembled you'll have an idea of where to look for the answer.
What connection?
Regards,
Alan

Alan , I stand corrected . I was looking at the wire behind the engine harness . It looked like it was coming out of the engine harness . When I pulled the engine harness out of the way , I could see the grommet that you mentioned . I should have remembered , I just recently wired the car. The brain cells are getting old .
