Birdcage Primer (Green) Source????

[QUOTE=7T1vette For birdcage or other [metal] frame use, you also need to be concerned with light surface rusting. Once loose rust has been dislodged and surface is cleaned and free of contaminants, a 'rust encapsulator' or 'rust converter' should be used to seal that surface rust to the base material and prevent progression of rusting.
Available at Walmart. I found it to be no different from the "restoration supply" products. Milky white liquid that dries black.

Alan,
Sorry to say the side exhaust and covers were gone before I bought this car. I think the best indicator on my car or any other is the threaded clips that the covers attach to. They were originally spot welded in place prior to the fiberglass body being installed over them. The spot welds are original. These couldn't be spot welded back on unless the fiberglass that covers over the rocker channel was removed and replaced. I have to replace mine since the bolts were broken off inside the threaded clips. I plan on spot welding them in place from the back side of the rocker channel since I have the body off. Although I have considered one more attempt at getting the broken bolts off. I have 3 1969 cars with side exhaust and I have been doing a comparison from one to the other. Having 3 has given me the opportunity to compare things and look for similarities. They came from 3 different owners and 3 different states so the chances of a "non original" would stand out. But stranger things have happened.

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/ This is where we buy it... comes in either quart or rattle can. But I'll tell you the last order we received as a bit darker than the original GM stuff.

We dont use zinc chromate anymore. It kills ya! We use green epoxy primer. Still kills ya if used improperly
As a side note, when I first started in aviation maintenance some 35 yrs ago, we used a lot of chemicals that are known carcinogens. Over the yrs many have been weeded out. PPE's, aka, personal protection equipment is paramount to living long lives. Sadly, I have known many mechanics who died of cancer. How many were contracted by using these dangerous chemicals, I do not know.

Its gotten to the point at my airline where they do not purchase it. If you grind or sand parts that had previously been painted with chromium, it must be in a room that has a dust collection system. We have to review a video course every year, it warns of the dangers of chromium. Birth defects, cancers, liver problems. I dont care whether you buy it and use it, just be aware of the potential health issues.

This was recommended by a member a few years ago. It worked very nice, the shade was very close to what was on my 69. Yes need to where a mask for sure but not a big deal.

That looks like the 'right stuff' !
Hey, I just noticed on the can that it is made just down the road from me in Sparta, TN. Next time I'm down there during the week, I'll have to stop in and say, "Hey!".
