78, picked it up Thursday from winter storage. Everything was good until about half way home. Developed a strange noise, with the window down I thought a couple of lug nuts came off and were bouncing around. Not the case. Got it home, drove the front onto ramps. Opened the hood, the noise is just barely noticeable, get under the car and it sounds like your shaking a spray paint can. While the car was running I crawled underneath and could not seen anything that didn't look right.Thought the screen on the pickup tube broke off and removed the pan. Not the case. Keep in mind the sound is not continuous more like something bouncing around. Open to suggestions as to what to look for next.
Thanks Bill
If it something in the valve covers, would the noise be more noticeable above with the hood open, rather than from underneath?
yeah probably if I learn to read
you could take a long screwdriver and put the blade against things and keep the handle next to your ear to hear things better to see if you could narrow it down
If it is an automatic, check the bolts on torque converter to flywheel.
GOOD-CALL
had that happen to me om 1st car 1959 Chevy Impala in 1966
mechanic told me it was engine bearings - he put on his lift and listened with a stethoscope
my buddy and i did our 1st engine removal -discovered the torque converter bolts were loose & making a ticking noise when hitting bell housing on trans
we got a real education on that one

could be mice or squirrels hid some nuts up in your bell housing and theyre bouncing around, hopefully.....but.
does it change as you accelerate, definitely use the screwdriver trick and try to narrow it down. bearings are usually consistant so it could be a broken clutch finger, or flywheel bolt......

I had the exact same symptoms and found that two flywheel bolts were backing out allowing for enough play to slap around and make that metal on metal sound. Tightened them down, and now I just hear the purr of the v8. forgot to mention, flywheel to torque converter.

Reason: was not specific on which bolts.
